Default So how do you use Hellenic Spearmen?

I'm unsure how to use them together with phalangites and cavalry. So how do you use them?

Protecting my phalanxes flanks and also for countercharging enemy cavalry. When I fight against phalanxes I use them also for enveloping and attacking from the rear the enemy after pining their phalanxes with my own. Coupled with cavalry charges in the rear of the enemy usualy results in enemy phalanx broking and fleeing. And repeat ...

I assume we're talking about Thureophoroi.

Carthage has a similar unit; in the early game, I use them as the primary line holders along with the African hoplites but they later get swapped with the heavier version (equivalent of Thorakitai).

I rarely use them in this role with Hellenic factions since they have tons of other units to make up the main line. Usually they tend to serve in support roles for the heavier units. Just yesterday in my Epeiros campaign, I placed them behind the classic hoplites in case they got flanked which they did. The hoplites themselves were stationed to the left of the Makedonian phalangites; the right flank was guarded by Bruttians and Illyrians.

In my Koinon campaign, my battle line gradually evolved; levy hoplites were replaced by Iphicratean hoplites and these are in turn getting replaced by Thureophoroi. Next step are the Thorakitai but I suspect Thureophoroi will remain present even later on.

All in all, they are a good unit but don't expect miracles from them.

When I use phalanxes, I have hoplites immediately flanking them (one unit on each side) then the Thureophoroi/Keltohellenikoi immediately outside them.

If you're fighting "barbarians" they'll do as line troops.

    Do you mean Thureophoroi?

They are very good all around medium infantry so you can use them to hold position, flank other phalanxes , defend phalanx's ass, vs cavalry, vs infantry (not good against sword or axe armed infantry tho)
Pretty much they can be everything except for assault force. They also dont fight in close formation and tend to wander pretty far , at least for me so keep that in mind.

Of course if you're talking about Hellenic Native Spearmen (Pantodapoi) then the way you use them is not at all. Or if you really have to, as garrison troops, and nothing else. Preferably somewhere so far from any likely attack that they'll never have to fight a battle.

But we are talking about these dudes, right (or these who are identical)?
