Hello! I'm new to the forum.
First, I really appreciate devs for making such a wonderful mod. I minored in history and studied lots of historical warfare as my hobby; and I hated the multiplayer-focused direction the total war series was taking because battles -which were already very short- were getting even shorter after MT2 to the point that battles felt like micromanaging 20 units in Starcraft than fighting a real battle.I felt that CK2 battles on strategic level has more depth than some of the total war games.
On top of that, Rome 2 added supernatural abilitiesthat I've completely given up hopes on the series.... until I came across DEI.
DEI re-kindled my fascination with the total war series with long-lasting battles and importance of formations. It preciously fit with the play style I love: realistic fights.
I have won some historical battles in vanilla with legendary difficulty by baiting a portion of enemy units and exhausting them, but that's not how I normally like to play. I want to employ historical tactics and diverse maneuvers such as breaking through the centre, echelon formation, and checkered formation(none of which work in vanilla and that is sad) rather than the same hammer and anvil tactics by mindlessly micromanaging my cavalries to flank the enemy in every single battle. Those different maneuvers might not be as effective as hammer and anvil, but I am glad that I can at least use those tactics in DEI to some extent.
However, I feel the battle is still a bit too short to allow tactical diversity and significance of formations. Many ancient battles lasted hours, if not days. (battle of Yarmouk lasted 6 days, for instance) Since Rome 2 portrays army sized scaled to about 1/10 of history, wouldn't it be better if battles lasted a bit more than it does in DEI? Here are some of my suggestions for DEI:
1. Battle causalities are too high. Too many soldiers die in a fight whereas in the real battles most soldiers were killed in routing phase.
2. Battles should last longer to allow more complicated maneuvers and switching between tired and fresh units to conserve stamina.
3. I am all for the gameplay taking priority over realism, but I'm in a firm belief that for battles, realism makes the game more fun and deep since its the focus of Total War series.
