Default Need some help with a "fatal graphics error"

I haven't been active in this whole forum as of late, but I recently started up Medieval 2: Total War, a game which I like just as much as Empire. I played quite a bit of it in years past, and have never once had a problem with it.

However, now it doesn't even start up right. When i click on the desktop icon, it goes into black screen for a second (the sign that it's loading) and then goes back to desktop, music still playing. The taskbar says that it's still open. I click on it, and it says "A fatal graphics error has occurred" with some suggestions telling me to set setting to low when i go into a battle. Well, that'd be great to do if I was even allowed in-game!

It then doesn't open up again, and soon it just automatically closes.

Any help for this? By the way, I got the game off of Steam.

No, same old computer, hard drive, everything...

Only thing that possibly could've changed is my video card driver, which is updated with GeForce. With that, I can optimise games, but it isn't able to optimise medieval..

Did the card play it before?
Have you tried verifying the game cache?
    What version of Windows?

Well, it did it again just now. A few days after the uninstall.

    I'll try verifying..

EDIT: Only two files failed to validate. Hopefully they're a part of it.

I have a similiar problem, using Steam version. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and verifying Steam game catch.

The launcher does not run. When I run medevial2.exe, I can do campaign map fine, but with I start a battle, it crashes to desktop with an "unspecified errror" My system.log has alot of entires with [data.missing] and entries like

    21:26:30.538 [system.io] [warning] open: data/models/textures/arrow_red.tga.dds is missing
    21:26:30.539 [system.io] [warning] open: data/models/textures/vertex_pointer.tga.dds is missing
    21:26:30.539 [system.io] [warning] open: data/models/textures/waypoint_marker.tga.dds is missing
    21:26:30.540 [system.io] [warning] open: data/textures/battlefield_border.tga.dds is missing
    21:26:30.540 [system.io] [warning] open: data/textures/deployment_area_border.tga.dds is missing
But I have verified these files actually exist in the directories ... I thought maybe it was a file access problem so I tried running as administrator but that doesn't help

Running Windows 8.1, it ran OK on Windows 8

All that is in the pack files. Nothing new.
    Alternative launcher. http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...2500705&page=2
Win 8: disable the UAC, take ownership/control of C: drive, and install Steam outside Program Files (x86) and Program files.
