    Default Annoying the Pope?

I would imagine that one sure fire way of getting more of a challenge out of the game would be to go out of your way to annoy the Pope if you are playing as a Catholic faction. It is my intention to play as England in my first campaign game and I intend in that campaign to get excommunicated ASAP to see just what sort of reaction I get from the other Catholic factions in the game.

Does anyone know if it is possible to have a crusade called against a Catholic faction, one that has been excommunicated? Would love that, bring em on, a crusading host trying to crush me would be a darn good fight.

The rise of Protestantism could also be incorporated into an expansion pack or mod for the late medieval period. The Spanish Armada and all that. Would be fun.

If you're excommunicated other catholic factions can launch a crusade against you, the pope can even ask other factions to launch a crusade against you.Well, it was so in MTW so I guess it will be the same in MTWII

Yes it is possible to crusade against other catholics.
There is a screenshot showing Portugal and another catholic joining hands to crusade against the sicilians.
I will find it for you.

Many thanks. Should be fun. Find it a wee bit strange though that the Pope is calling for an end to hostilities between England & France, they only really stopped fighting each other in the middle of the 19th Century.

I think those markers are just to show that the units are part of a Crusade but not special crusading units.

    I don't think so.
I can clearly see two similar units of horsemen, one has the sword icon and the other doesn't :hmmm:

Yea but the unit cards for them have different backrounds. The fighting icon one has a greenish one, the other blue. The 2nd one is probably a special unit levied for the crusade, like how in BI and with horde units. There was double units you had then that were copies of normal units, with lower stars *like normal Frank raiders, and Horde Raiders, normal archers and horde archers, etc*.

    another cool idea.
if you are a catholic nation, and take over the papacy, it would be cool if you could make one of yours priests pope.
of course that would make other countries "want to atack you". but it would be a cool option, if you conquer papacy, have your own forced pope, and call what crusades you want. And sometimes that even other countries could join that crusade.

Hmm, wasn't there a sort of counter-pope in Avignon at one time? Maybe that is the reason... is such a thing implemented into the game?

I remember that back in the old Medieval conquering the Papal states was among the first things to do for me. But the problem was, the faction re-appeared every couple of years. That was very annoying, but had a bright side - my troops garrisoned there had a constant practice.

I hope this idiocy is fixed in the new game. Paganism over Europe! >=]

the anti-popes of Avignon have been regarded by the Church as it's own sort of 'Babylonian Captivity'. I would hope to see the use of anti-popes in the game.

Well you can make one of your priests Pope anyway, there are Papal elections in M2Tw, and you can rig them so one of your priests who is a Cardinal becomes Pope.
