    Default Directx10

A question for those of you who have a good knowlegde of this techy stuff.

When directx10 ships out sometime next year, will it make all the high end graphics cards of today and the very near future obsolete?
I mean will today's cards be able to utilise directx10 when it comes out? If no, wouldn't it be better to wait upgrading one's video card until the new directx10 compatible cards come out? If you wanted your investment to be worth it that is.

I know when it comes to buying new computers and hardware something new and better is always going to come out next month or next week, essentially it is unavoidable that whatever we buy will become obsolete fairly quickly. But in this case, with directx10 on the verge of release, is the next step in "evolution" going to be much bigger than usual?

That is right...DX10 will take a new generation of cards but won't work on even my 7800GT which I think is a fraud...that is I think they could easily make DX10 an upgrade just like DX9 was but this is all part of a scheme to force us into the very useless Vista upgrade so that Mr Bill can have more money.

I just bought a top of the line system last year. Like I'm going to go out and buy another system just for Crysis? hah..

Well, you could still play with geForce 4 Titanium card, which is DX8, so DX9-cards won't be obsolete immediately. You can play happily with your high-end dx9 cards, but you won't get any dx10 effects and stuff (Although I don't know if they're so cool afterall). First DX10 cards will be out next month, I quess. But that stupid Vista... Grrrr...

Your right Sparticus, topend late model VC's like 7900GTX's, X1900XTX's, X1950XT's, 7950XG2's are all Vista compatable because they utilize DX9.0C. They will not be able to utilize the DX10 feature of Vista or it's graphic benefits.
Because of the way MS has set up the upgrade process of Vista, it's a mistake to run out and buy the first DX10 optimized GPU's because everytime Vista is upgraded, and it will be upgraded alot in the beginning, you'll have to upgrade your DX10 optimized components as well, to be able to use the newest Vista upgrades!
They are not telling people this, and there is alot of "built in money making features" about Vista that MS is not telling people about. Very sneaky, very deceptive, untrustworthy to say the least. Like a friend who comes over to your house and steals from you, while smiling at you the whole time.....

Really? By upgrading DX10 optimized components, you mean getting a new video card ?

Well, since the PS3/XBOX360?Wii dont use DirectX10 i dont think there will be alot of games that will use it from the start, because most games get ported from pc to console or from console to pc. But there will always be games that have state of the art graphics and will require DirectX10.

I am glad to see a new OS is featured with a new API, that makes only one change, but I hear that a new OS after Vista will not be 4 years after Vista is released, so why spend the money on a DX10 card when the OS will be replaced in a 2 year time frame.

Hello shenmueguru, my brother and allie from the Thema Deva forum!

Vista will be upgraded by MS periodically, it's designed that way. One of the ways they have come up with to control component manufacturers is to upgrade the OS in a way that any current components a system may have, won't be able to utilize the upgrade, especially DX10 modifications. MS will not let component manufacturers have the coding to upgrade the components until after the upgrade, thus you have to buy a new component each time to keep up with the upgrades or your version of Vista will not be able to impliment the upgrade. By doing this, they can control who manufactures what, and if they don't like your company, then guess who doesn't get the coding and who's products won't work on the updated Vista! Ouch!

So therefore, buying Vista with one of the first DX10 cards is strongly unadvised?

Strongly unadvisable. If you gotta have Vista, wait at least a little while for the first couple of initial upgrades before you jump, especially on a DX10 compatable VC. Sort of like buying the first model of a new car, the following models always benefit from first models failures....

I have a feeling that Vista wouldn't be successful...as nice as it looks with its cool animations, icons, and whatever else, it's way too power-demanding, and would probably cost quite a bit.

Microsoft has confirmed that Vista will cost the same as XP. So when it comes out, I can buy the Vista upgrade for $100 and the basic edition will be the usual $200.
