Default First past the post or altenrative vote?

Hi, im am unsure about these system. I understand how they work, but which is the best one?

First past the post is that the candidate with the most votes get the parliament seat.
Alternative vote is an easy system where the person that the most voters prefer gets the seat. They did not necessarily vote him first, but he gets in due to the fact that voters would rather prefer him over the other alternatives.

These two videos explain the differences and reasons for why Alternative Voting is better.

From watching these videos I came out with the opinion that First Past the Post (FTTP) is worse, but I haven't heard any arguments for it and against alternative vote.
Basically, with the alternative vote I rank the candidates from first preferred to least preferred. I would really watch the videos, they'll give a better explanation than I can.

So its basically an instant run off but not really? So if nobody gets 51% you drop the out the lowest candidate with lowest voter count (of choice one) and than all who remain get all the second choice picks he got? what if that does not work drop another candidate or to by round do run through all lower and lower picks of dropped guy?

I seems to that could be a problem what if the cut out guy's second choice is enough push somebody to 51%, but if all second choices give a different candidate an overwhelming percentage say 70% or so?

I suppose it does maybe give a bit of a boost to non standard or main stream parties because voters might feel more confident (here an America) to say vote for the green party w/o their 'protest' vote resulting something like handing an election to GB jr in Florida in 2000 in that I suspect the second choice of most of Nader's votes would not be Republican... But of course he was not the one going to be cut so what if the First choice for Gore and the second choices for Nader - clearly gave Gore a better tally - however what if the second choices on the all the rest still gave Bush the winning vote tally?

That would not be a problem, there would never be more than one candidate of over 50% so not a problem ever.

I can't see how that would be the case

Because the sum of all votes are ALWAYS 100%

If player A gets 25% and B 35% and c 40% and you remove player A those 25% will be distributed among the two other, thus will it still be 100%

But not a 100% of choice 1... and first past the poll also counts all voters as well.

So again suppose the question I have to ask is take your narrative the second choices of A turned into first choices might put say C over the top by 51%, but what if the combined total of all second choices put B way over the top? They can't becuse your second choice has no value until your primary candidate is tossed out.

Given your argument the second choices of A might give the election to B at 51% but what if the total second choices from all three add up for a total of more for C? Than that aside from the fact C had the lead in first choices? i.e. assume:

A has just enough second choices (now counted as first) for B to win at 51%. But what if B's second choices would have given a victory to C? Now you are prioritizing second choices over first selectively since now only the people who voted and lost for A decided the election. Did they expect that?

Not telling us anything else about the system? Nothing about the nature of the districts or anything else like that? Pretty useless question as this is all an interwoven system.

I still don't see any vast improvement over FPTP. As the goal is just a bare majority you always going to have to have a large junk of people who did not vote for some guy X. I suppose you you make that you have to rank everyone but that seems like just manufacturing some-kind of pretend number. In the US currently and in context for example I would likely reflexively rate the Democrats 1 and than for maybe the Greens or whatever left parties were running as 2 or such. I certainly never rate a Republican so what's the net gain to the system? Maybe it works for the EU parliament or something where a lot parties run and their our no dominate ones, but at least in America it looks like tinkering at the edge and not really solving any valid issue
