Default How can I mod unit's weapons

    Hi all,

I realize that most, if not all Rome's units in later turns, after technology research and upgrades are no longer spears units but infantry. DeI adds in quite a few units such as Hastati, and Hastati somethings. But they are all the same, all are spear units in earlier turns, and infantry after upgrade.

I feel the lack of spears a big problem for Rome army.

Thus I request modding hint to let me customize units so that they will still use spears. Maybe, I can make at least one unit using pike.

Please if you have a modding idea, please help.

p.s: please don't turn it into a discussion of military history or sorts.

considering early hastati > imperial legion due to op spears, u have a point.

its under pack1 file, open with PFM, go find the unit section, find the corresponding units, and change their weapon type accordingly. you will find it under primary melee weapon section of the unit database.

The Marian and Imperial legions didn't really use spears. At least not the core legionaries. Thats what the auxiliary was for so that they could provide things the army at the time was lacking. With AOR currently you can conquer lets say Greece or Near Gaul and you can get spear units there for the later legions. In 0.9 You will get your very own personalized auxiliary units with the added bonus of being somewhat historically accurate!

    also this,
but even in italy in current version, you can recruit basic auxiliary spears.

although i find that if you are using spears strictly to counter cavalry, they generally arent in the right place at the right time and is slow to get there.
legionary velites or the later angiestgani w/e, these guys do really high AP damage and they are fast and ranged, you can get them where they need to be to quickly to javelin down the enemy cavs

To all hero-keyboards and virtual-world-historians, I didn't ask to bring in a history class here.

First, this is a game, and there are people who wants to play the game the way they want. Maybe they want to live in a virtual world where they can change history.

Second, this is a modable game, where people like me can practice and learn "reversed engineering". I simply want to learn modding, thus have an idea on how a big program is constructed.

    Third, now for REAL MODERS:

What I have tried: using PFM 3.2, the correct version, I was able to change the units class, units attributes, and types of weapons in db script. HOWEVER, THE WEAPONS APPEAR AS INVISIBLE. I believe I have to change the texture as well. How can I change it ?

Well since I am no real moder as you so eloquently put, no I do not know how to change the values of the weapons. Was just trying to be helpful with the answer I provided and the fact that in this game thats how you get spear units for rome. If you don't particularity like the historical aspect of the mod then I personally suggest another like Radious, damn good modder though it doesn't fit my tastes. I'll go ahead and go be a virtual-world-historian elsewhere now, I hope you can learn to mod and make an amazing career of it
