Default US backed Libyan general tries to stage a coup in Libya

You remember Libya? Well apparently a powerful pro-US general tries to seize power in Libya throught the use of force. The first time he tried that was in february. This is a second more serious attempt since he has attacked both Tripoli and Benghazi. US is very annoyed because the current government tries to stabilize the country with the help of Islamic militias. This, is unacceptable. So they help Mr Haftar to try and seize power through the use of force

And this means the US backs him currently how? The same US that just had special forces board a tanker the separatists in Eastern Libya in support of the Libyan government?

Also, Islamist militias have not helped stabilize Libya. They have only created problems.

US saw a "deterioration" in security in Libya, some hours before Haftar starts attacking. Coinsidence?

How do you know thats not the US opposing Haftar? Of course the security has went down in Libya, a renegade general is attacking Islamist militias and there is heavy fighting in Tripoli.

Has it occurred to you the 200 marines might be a response force to prevent another Benghazi?

    @Papay

So everything is a US conspiracy?

Did the US install Gaddafi? Was what 40-50 years of one man rule ever going to end with what a pretty pink pony democracy like they have in Norway.

Why do all the anti americans on this forum manage to make me pro american when I really see myself as wanting to be neutral based on a case by case basis...

OK Papay, let's look at the situation from another angle: let's assume the current Libyan government does have strong ties with Islamic militias.

Should anybody in the West (not only the US) tolerate a fundamentalist Libya so close? I mean, right now ships carrying African emigrants often manage to avoid the Italian Coast Guard and to land those people. What if next batch unloaded on the Italian soil would be an Ansar al-Sharia (Al Qaeda) commando?

Here is a better source than what he was presenting: http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News...official-.html

Exactly what i thought. The 200 Marines are part of a task-force formed after Benghazi to ensure the safety of US embassy officials. They were deployed to Southern Italy in case of an attack on US officials in the embassy in Tripoli.

The U.S. military has moved a team of marines from Spain to southern Italy as a precautionary step in case the U.S. embassy in Libya comes under threat, officials said Wednesday.

The contingent of nearly 200 marines is part of a newly-created “crisis response” force set up in the wake of a deadly attack on a U.S. diplomatic outpost in the Libyan city of Benghazi in 2012.

Yes they did deployed for that reason. Apparently US knew that a day later their general would try to stage a coup, risking a possible attack by Islamists at the US embassy

It's hard to say if this Libyan General is US backed. Osama Bin Laden, Qaddafi and Saddam Hussein were all backed by the US Government at one point, but then their alliances shattered which resulted in a series of conflicts. I'm going to need something a bit more substantive regarding him being US backed. Libya is also in chaos right now so it's somewhat difficult to get a clear picture; I have no doubt agencies like the CIA, SIS, CSIS, DCRI the FSB and so on are actively involved in Libya but we need solid evidence before we can conclude this General is US backed.

Basically, it wouldn't surprise me if this General is US backed but i'm not going to conclude anything without solid evidence.

Objection! As the leader of the 3rd World, Gaddafi has never been backed by the US.

Even if this general is backed by the US, I still support him as I would support anyone who once had a vintage relationship with Gaddafi. Because sooner or later, Haftar will outlive his usefulness to the US, and when that happens I will sing "Sto Lat" to his name.

At this point, I don't know if anyone really knows what's going on in Libya; also, there might be a hands-off policy by NATO, until the dust settles.

Is this the same general that lived in the US for 20 years and hid children as well as his small group of mercenaries that also came over here were split up and lived over here as well? All this by the CIA of course.

Answering my own post 2 months later, it seems that the us backed general has failed and the islamists are gaining the upper hand. Sad for the west but...why they overthrew Ghaddafi?

    Indeed.

If you want to start a discussion about the fall of Ghaddafi, please do so in the VV.
Or if you want to discuss the current goings-on in Libyia, you can do so here.
