I know Shogun 2 came first but would it not be more logical to play RoS first or is that not recommended? Note I have played all the previous total wars so i'm not a noob at this.

Doesn't matter, really. Keep in mind Rise of the Samurai is the original game with a few new things thrown in, so it might be best to start with the original.

In my opinion RotS is harder than Shogun, probably because the levy infantry is of inferior quality than the Ashigarus or because the AI is really evil, even the models are absolutely cool, the 'Yoroi' armors are really cool, but also the 'Haramaki-do' and the 'do maru' of the levies and Samurai attendants are nice ... (highly suggested mod Radious for FotS, that is, Unit pack 1, I think)
