You have to wait for the reforms.
Pretorians as in history can only be employed as bodyguards, not as standard unit.

You are saying there were no legions of pretorians?? Does not sound right...
Praetorians were only in the Praetorian Guard. It was a unit strictly stationed in Rome that served more as the Emperor's bodyguard than an actual legion. Under Severus, they became made up of the best troops in the empire, but no, they weren't mass produced and again, served more of a bodyguard function than an actual legion. After the Severus reforms, it became more of an honor than anything else.
Praetorians started as "Tent Guards/ for the general, so it would make sense for them to be a general's unit.
While waiting for patch 9 I have started playing Constantine: Rise of Christianity a great mod by Dresden (well not only, but he is the mod leader). I handle the preatorien problem by only using two units, one in the army of my Tetrarch, and one in my capital. There really should be no armies/legions of praetorians it's stupid and it's taken straight out of a fantasy novel...
It is thought the arm protection was a temporary measure brought in for the second Dacian war to counteract the Falx weaponry carried by their warriors. Not much mention of it apart from that unfortunately .
