    Default Re-Training

This may not be the right place to ask this.. but to me, DeI -is- Rome 2.

I was wondering what Re-training a unit actually does. It always seems to be greyed out for me. Would it allow me to, say, upgrade a poorly militia unit to its next tier? Like say a Levy Pikemen to a Pikemen and so on? If so what are the requirements to do so cause I've never had the option available?

I believe it does do something like that, where you can upgrade your Principes to Marian Legionaries for example.

I wish the feature was used more often. Being able to upgrade Pikemen to Thorax Pikemen would be great, since there are reforms in place that affect them. Just as an example.

That's great! Now I just have to find out why I can't retrain units. It says I have to be in a settlement with the right buildings. I am in a settlement where I can recruit the unit I want to retrain to, but still the retrain icon is greyed out. Is it tied to a type of building other than being able to recruit them? Maybe a technology? (My example is what I am trying to retrain. Levy Pikemen to Pikemen).

I would try building the combat bonuses/training field building tree that might work.

    I'll try that. Thanks!

Thats how it works in vanilla, ATM Retraining doesn't work in DEI. Because the reform units are blocked by scripts.

At current, to the best of my knowledge, retraining is only used when you build say a workshop (to use rome as an example) and the unit you want to retrain doesn't have level 1 weapon/armour. Retraining it will give it level 1 weapon/armour. it will NOT change the type of unit.

For example you can not retrain a Principes (early) into a Princeipes (late) or Legonarrii. Waiting on CA to allow DeI to be able to do this. :\

Yeah, in vanilla, retraining basically turns old-fashioned units into their tech-unlock replacements (early to late Carthaginian hoplites, hastati/principes to legionaries, etc.) Since DeI uses scripts to unlock reform troop types, it's unused in DeI. I sort of wish the re-training function could be re-purposed to work like the re-arming button and retrain troops with any stat bonuses granted by buildings in the province (for instance, from training fields). Alas.

yea, giving new recruits extra training is fine. but apperently having standing soldiers do some extra training is beyond the wits of men according to CA.....

I completely agree with you. That way if you want to get the most out of those training buildings, you wouldn't be forced to build all those in one province at once. Instead you could just build them in separate provinces, and apply them to troops passing through, AFTER they have been recruited.

I know there's people who would find this op, and CA probably did not include this for some gameplay or balance reason, but after all you pay for your units to retrain. If you're growing a fine economy, and you meanwhile research the training tech tree, better trained soldiers could be a great way to reward you for that. At the moment the training tech tree is not at all that useful (it's just not worth it "investing" all your time into a boost that only takes effect on newly recruited units). I would actually love this feature, perhaps DeI could make this possible?

Perhaps I should start a new thread for this my rant's getting longer than I expected

Easy solution: nerf the effects of the training fields so they're not so OP. Or just don't include them at all. But having them around with the kind of ad hoc limitations they have is the worst of all worlds.

I'd find that an acceptable solution. Having to disband existing cohorts and train fresh ones just to get the full effect irks me to no end. Getting rid of those buildings altogether would indeed be better than only new units benefitting from them.

Agreed. Kind of dilutes the purpose of veteran armies.

That's disappointing but outside of DeI's hands I suppose. Thanks for the heads up.

I actually don't mind the feature is blocked by script, I build an army with the latest units and systematically send them to the front to replace the old units whom then get disbanded in Rome. I continue to do this one by one. It takes longer but it adds a level of realism to the fact that it takes time for an entire military system back then to completely reform every single combat group/army. An Army behind enemy lines blocked off from supply lines can't very well get the latest and greatest in equipment instantly after a reform, or training and military doctrine installed in them for that matter. Kinda adds a dynamic to the game.

The only real quirk I can understand is losing that experience from veteran armies. Disbanding the units doesn't really effect the quality of the troops much in my Roman campaign, I usually get a Roman governor to have camp administration skills and become a lvl3 drill master in Rome so they come out with silver chevron experience among other things. I suggest doing that trait if disbanding your veteran units really messes with your campaign.

I'm fine with not being able to upgrade troops to their reform replacements. Still it'd be nice if there was some other use for that button.
