OMNI magazine did a lot to popularize Giger's work in 1978. It wasn't until 1979 that the first Alien film came out. It was an unusual science magazine by the publisher of Penthouse magazine. Believe it or not, they released those issues from 1978-1995 into the public domain, and so you could see a lot of his art as well as lots of science fiction that was published as short stories within those issues too.
