Default Large anti-China protests hold in Vietnam

Meh, I bet Tsar Putin, the boss of Vietnam, is too scared to say anything that would piss Chinese.

Hundreds of people across Vietnam have protested against China's role in a sea dispute - the largest rallies of their kind recently in the communist country.

In the capital, Hanoi, demonstrators sang patriotic songs and held up placards opposite the Chinese embassy.

Tensions have been running high after Vietnamese ships clashed with Chinese vessels guarding an oil rig in a contested area of the South China Sea.

The protests appear to have the Vietnamese government's approval.

The country's communist authorities have broken up previous anti-China demonstrations because of fears that they may be hijacked by pro-democracy activists, says the BBC's Asia Pacific editor, Charles Scanlon.

Nevertheless, he says, Hanoi has also used the demonstrations to communicate its anger over what it sees as Beijing's aggressive infringement of Vietnamese sovereignty.

So now what? Since Obama already showed he is willing to pursue tougher policies in East Asia, do you think that would encourage Tsar Putin, together with his henchman India and rest of its camp, to join West's blockade against China?

First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes foreign investments of the "bamboo network" in a baby carriage. Either that or a pointless war over the Spratly Islands.

Same reason why the CCP gets jumpy when Beijing political protests start becoming too much for their proxy handlers to manage.

US warns Beijing on South China Sea tensions

The US has warned China that moving a drilling rig into seas disputed with Vietnam was "provocative".

In a telephone call, US Secretary of State John Kerry told Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi the US had "strong concerns" over recent developments.

Last week, Chinese and Vietnamese ships clashed over the drilling rig that China has placed in waters near the disputed Paracel Islands.

China and Manila are also at odds over overlapping territorial claims.

Beijing claims a U-shaped swathe of the South China Sea that covers areas other South East Asian nations say are their territory.

The issue has been rumbling in recent years amid an increasingly assertive stance from China over its claims.

Divisions in the anti-Western bloc are a good thing. There is an opening here to contain China if a common front can be agreed with the Phillipines, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea etc.

While both are repressive regimes, the world owes Vietnam a debt of gratitude for saving the Cambodian people from the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime (and having the good grace to leave). China on the other hand has never forgiven them for it.

Russia vs Ukraine. Now China vs Vietnam.

    Invade Canada!

While I still hold America won the Vietnam War, we were definitely on the wrong side.

The issue is Vietnam is in Russia camp, since Vietnam's military capacity is largely built by Russian and Putin shows little sign to stop that (if not trying to strength it); I do think Putin may just ask India get involve so Russia would not be on the front screen.

There is reports of these protest turning into looting sprees against Chinese (or really all other east Asian) shops / factories, though I only seen local news here report but nothing on the international outlets yet.
1180, an unprecedented period of peace and prosperity in East Asia, it's technology and wealth is the envy of the world. But soon conflict will engulf the entire region with great consequences and lasting effects for centuries to come, not just for this region, but the entire known world, when one man, one people, unites.....

The reports I saw only said it aimed on shops/factories that have Chinese characters on it; we can safely say those looting probably only aims on Chinese.

You do realize that Japanese factories also have Hanji as their title right? not to mention the Taiwanese once.

You do realize Taiwan is part of China, even according to current government ruling Taiwan?

Vietnam and India were drifting towards the US for the last 20 years already, in spite of their good relations with Russia simply because money makes the world go round.

And since both have still open territorial disputes with China, the more muscle China is going to flex, the quicker they would get closer to the US for military reasons as well.

It's not like Russia would stand up to China on behalf of India or Vietnam any time soon, the way the US propped up Japan and the Philippines recently. So while those two would maintain their friendly relations with Russia for as long as it is possible, they know they have no other alternative than the US.

It all depends on the Americans' skill in handling Pakistan (not the best track record so far), but overall things seem to go towards increasing America's influence in Asia after a rather long period of decline.
It's hard to say really, because the flip side of the issue is that China has increasing clout on the economy of the region, (not as much in India, but certainly South East Asia.) while the SEA countries are also pushing harder in terms of international arbitration.

Viewing this in the absolute, if Chinese and Taiwanese money pull out of Vietnam, it will be a disaster for them, and they're already falling behind places like Thailand and Indonesia, not exactly the model of political competence themself, but if you visit Saigon vs Bangkok vs Jakarta, it's pretty obvious which one is developing the slowest.

The CCP in China have managed to keep an tight grip politically due to their economic success, their Vietnamese counter part is trying to mimic that, but for that to happen they can't allow for a massive flight of foreign capital, especially in terms of the Taiwanese is most ironic and hilarious, since if those Taiwanese factory pull out then the Vietnamese will flock out of their country to work in similar factory.......... in Taiwan.
