Really though, you would never see an animated kid's show like this in recent times, anywhere. And not just because of the ridiculous racial and ethnic stereotypes, but also the plot ideas, the brand of humor itself, and the rather adult content that a lot of kids might not have understood.

You may have recent cartoons that are just as zany, like the 90s Nikelodeon show Animaniacs. However, those are few and far between. Animated shows aimed at adults today like South Park or Family Guy don't count, because I'm strictly talking about children's cartoons and programming at least originally meant for kids.

This thread doesn't have to be restricted to Popeye. Please share any old cartoon from the 20s, 30s, 40s, or 50s that you think are extraordinary, unique, and worth watching even as adults.

I was still a teen (well, 19) in the end of the 90s, and mostly saw cartoons in the 80s. Back then there were loads of super-cool cartoons on tv, and none of the saccharine crap which came later.

I had seen that Popay one, but to be honest it seemed not that interesting to me (a bit heavy on the ugly tones too, i recall) next to most of the rest which one got to see on tv or by renting video-casettes ( ). The concurrent popay with the sinbad the sailor, well, it made a bigger impression, and was quite dark..

The two coolest (and bleak) American cartoons in the 80s were:

    Inhumanoids:

(just watch the 1,5 min there, needs no comment )

    Spiral Zone:

But my all-time favorite was the french cartoon Ulysse 31

Cartoons started being crap in the start of the 90s. TNMT played a part there, but Simpsons was the kill, i think. Good as comedy, but trash otherwise.

MLP is in no way 90s-like (judging by the images of it i saw, i haven't watched any of it). Furthermore, the original MLP (in the 80s) looked entirely different, and was meant for very young children (as in up to 8 or something, and at any rate before puberty)

I think the current MLP is mostly similar stylistically to the early 2000s 'power puff girls' cartoon, which i also found very horrible animation-wise, and a really decadent idea with all the meant sarcasm on the previous cartoons.

Adventure time is up there with Game of Thrones and Fargo as one of the best shows on TV.

@Roma: Thanks It was a very cool show..

I haven't managed to find the episode with the one-eyed armless inhumanoid, which iirc was the most brutal in the series.

The waking of Sliver also was a memorable moment

Initially, cartoons were meant for adults and shown in movie theatres, their script had references that adults understood. The event of television meant that studios had to cater more for a younger audience, but the introduction of cable provided a niche for shows targetted at more mature viewers.

Some cartoons had a quite imaginative world (mostly some anime, though, or other east-asian animation). Inhumanoids stood out (and was cancelled after only one season iirc) due to having a very bleak plotline, some violence (although not deaths of humans, of course), but mostly a rather sinister and quite elaborate underground realm for the monsters. I don't recall any other western cartoon where you had some main monsters, some humans who tried to harvest the power of the monsters, then other monsters trying to guard the balance in the underground realm or fight with their own factions, then renegade groups of freaks (stone archers? very good ), and frequent death of any non-human apart from the main antagonists.

Also some humans were reborn/altered into half-human creatures. Bonus points for a musical orchestra composed of the exosceletons of bugs (cause bugs by themselves would be too mainstream ).

My favorite shows on french tv during the late 80's and early 90's were almost all japanese animation (captain harlock, cobra, city hunter, dbz, sherlock holmes, princess sarah (the only "girl" show all the boys looked in secret with their eyes full of tears lol) captain futur (capitaine flam in france) or european/japanese cooperations (ulysse 31 iirc, a spanish/japanese show about the cid, dogtanian, the cities of gold etc) i disliked the western animation and the american shows (mostly because the largest part lacked continuity or because i disliked the esthetism). I also liked the french cartoons "once upon a time" (the space, men, life, adventurers etc).

I am currently on my phone but i will post videi tomorrow.

We've all experienced that crucial moment when you're watching Looney Tunes cartoons late at night, perhaps with your mind in a slightly impaired state, and you go, "Man, this is great. This is high art. They should, like, give this stuff awards." Well, they did. As in, Academy Awards. In total, five Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies cartoons won Oscars in the "Best Short Subject (Cartoon)" category, otherwise known as "Most Hilarious Animal-Related ." And here's the thing: None of those cartoons would exist if it wasn't for a single producer everyone hated, and the animators' burning desire to do the exact opposite of everything he said.
