Press end turn and...game exits, installs something, and reloads?

I ended my second turn last night (Summer 1545), playing as Takeda in a vanilla campaign on Shogun 2 Gold Edition, and the strangest thing happened - the game appeared to crash to the desktop, only it wasn't really a crash as such. Steam started to install something, then prompted me with the play dialogue box and all the options (Play, Encyclopaedia, the various benchmark options), and further asked me to select DirectX9 or DirectX10 from another dialogue window (it normally doesn't do that part). The game then loaded back up, splash screen and intro videos. Went back into my save (not the autosave, wouldn't anyway and it certainly wouldn't be wise under these conditions), ended my turn again, and everything went as it should, with the other clans making their moves.

It has happened before, but not when ending a turn (which to be honest I haven't really done much of because I haven't been playing much); previously, it was when I was starting a custom battle (part of the set-up, selecting a map, can't quite remember - it may have been when I actually confirmed my choices and started). I never let the game install or muck about with DirectX (it always prompts me if I want to let the Steam client make changes to the computer - does this for other games like Skyrim also).

So, what the heck did it install?

Do you own Rome2?

I don't, but I did note in a Google search that on the Steam forums, someone related the mini-updates to when Rome 2 was released.
