    Default Non-Couched Charge Weapons

The "Spears" combined charge values (2+6=8) is lower than that of the Arming Sword (4+5=9) which is leading to a lot of situations where a unit with a spear would be better off not using it and simply charging in with the sword.

Am I misinterpreting this? It's bothering me that "charger" units with spears or non-couched lances basically get no use out of them, because the charge values of arming and long swords are equal or better.

I don't know if there's anything hidden at play, for example strike_distances.

What happens if you run a cavalry unit into another unit with spear out and with sword out? In which case do they do better?

Some units do indeed have better close combat stats than charge stats. This is intentional, but also be aware that in a charge situation that the mount mass will combine with the attack values to generate a different result to melee. You will find this whole situation altered for the better with RC2.0, with cavalry being divided into skirmish, lancer, charger and brawler types, with associated specialty animations, stat changes and additional altering effects based on the quality of the unit, its aggression etc. In addition, non-couched charged weapons are faster, have less weight and heat penalty, do not necessarily negatively affect defense or the ability to use a shield, and need a much lower distance-to-target to pull off an effective charge.
