Default Russian provincial court outlaws translation of the Quran

    http://t.co/MLgYXA0X2C

MOSCOW -- Russia's top Islamic cleric has protested a provincial court order to declare a translation of the Quran as extremist and to destroy it.
Ravil Gainutdin, the head of the Council of Muftis of Russia, said in an open letter to President Vladimir Putin released Monday that the ruling was "illiterate" and "provocative."
The Quran is available in Russian translation, but the court last week ruled that the translation by Elmir Kuliyev published in Saudi Arabia in 2002 violated federal law banning extremist materials.
Gainutdin said that the "Russian Muslims were appalled by the neglect of law shown by the court" in the Black Sea port of Novorossiisk and demanded that the verdict be revoked. He said the court's order to destroy the Muslim holy book was particularly outrageous.
So now Muslims are the target after Gays.

    "a translation"

Is it one of those with the whole hadith stuff implanted using []'s? Still doesn't make much sense really.

I think the vast majority of Muslim clerics argue that Jihad is all about self-defense...that is, defending Islam from foreign annihilation.

A sizable handful of Muslim clerics around the world, however, interpret the holy war as something to be waged at all times against the infidel. Hence groups like Al Qaeda.

As for this court decision, it says it's for a local provincial court in Novorossiysk, Krasnodar Krai region, so it was hardly Putin's doing...I think. It only applies to that locality, not the whole of Russia as far as I can tell.

Did they list which parts of the translation they found objectionable? Perhaps the language could be modified.

By 'now' do you mean since September of last year when this happened?

To be fair, it is one of several available in the country. This version, the work of an Azeri theologian named Elmir Kuliyev, was declared illegal for promoting extremism through "statements about the superiority of Muslims over non-Muslims"; "negative evaluation of persons who have nothing to do with the Muslim religion"; "positive evaluation of hostile actions by Muslims against non-Muslims", and also, it was argued, inciting violence.

The Qur'an is not banned, just this version.

Shouldn't they outlaw most religious texts as it's a common theme to view adherence of said religion to be better than others? If that logic was indeed the basis of this ban then it's intellectually faulty.

It's probably a question of degree, since there are other translations that aren't banned. Having said that a ban is a stupidly blunt way of addressing those concerns.

As an aside, I'm amazed by how badly the OP understood his own reference, and how badly both the thread title and the original post are formulated: a local and low-level branch of the judiciary confused with the executive (and Putin's person), the extent of the 'ban' misunderstood, and even something as basic as the chronology of events... And then an inexplicable change of tac half-way through the thread when the OP supposedly found out that the Bible is banned in other countries! Entertaining reading, if nothing else!

Thread title misleading. It is translation of Quran, not Quran itself.
I don't agree with banning it thou. Should ban Old Testament too, with same logic.

So, banning a translation of the Koran which is not in-line with Orthodox Islam is outlawing the Koran? I'd say that the Russians are doing the Muslims a favor in this case.

There should be only 1 Quran as the angel told Muhammad what to write how can there be different versions.

    Two reasons really:

    1. translation. The semitic languages have many word with multiple meanings and in some cases a word can change the whole context.
    2. people who think are divinely inspired writing down their own thoughts in parenthesis or outright altering the original text.

The translations are not considered the Qur'an by muslims.

Not just semitic language. It's nothing strange muslims can have different interpretations of same verses even among Arabic speaking muslims. Even common and secular laws written in any language needs both prosecutors and defence attorney to interprete a same written line.

I'm actually almost certain that translating the Koran is generally frowned upon in Islam.
