    Default Painting Recommendation?

I'm going to pick a large painting for my room. It needs to be .... somewhat happy or inspiring, probably war-related, and not a mess like the mosaic of Alexander Mosaic.

So far I have found only one candidate:

    Can anyone recommend others?

PS: It needs to be landscape.

I'm not sure it this is landscape enough for you, but it qualifies the inspiring war related criteria.

I don't know the actual name of this painting, but Arnold von Winkelried by Konrad Grob might be considered it's common title. It depicts the moment the said Arnold von Winkelried heroically throws himself onto the pike wall, and mortally wounded gathers as many pikes as he can reach into his arms, thus forcing a way for his comrades into the Hapsburg pikemen at the Battle of Sempach, 1386.

I have one word for this scene: fierce.

Maybe some depiction of the mythical circle of Heracles?

    Or that of Theseus.

But if you want an actual battle or something involving armies, then i don't see why you dislike the famous Alexander mosaic, cause it probably is the epitomy of such a situation.

There is of course something even older, the "little boxing youths", from the Minoan era:

Λέων μεν ὄνυξι κρατεῖ, κέρασι δε βούς, ἄνθρωπος δε νῷι
"While the lion prevails with its claws, and the ox through its horns, man does by his thinking"

@Spear Dog: It seems sad. He died afterwards yes?
@Kyriakos: Any recommended paintings for Heracles?
@Orphydian: I'm going to pick one and send high-resolution picture for printing & framing, then I could hang it on the wall.

yeah, doesn't quiet hit the 'somewhat happy' criteria - but then again in the OP picture the chariot is dragging a dead body (Paris at Troy?).

You sir, have obviously no taste in inspirational artwork. Who wouldn't want the God-Emperor on their wall?

On Heracles, there are countless amphorae-images about his battles with all sorts of monsters. My favorite probably is with Geryones, a three-headed (also with more limbs) hoplite, who lived in a small island past the pillars of Hercules (which supposedly were a continuous landmass until Hercules cut through it).

I have a Diploma in art Foundation, a BA in Visual Arts Practice and a MA in Comparative Aesthetics and I still have that poster of the Emperor fighting Horus on my wall.
It's hard to beat good old fashioned representationalist fantasy artwork, the high level of technical competence combined with a good understanding of colour theory certainly helps. But that's meaningless without a knowledge of semiotics and the various traditions of composition associated with the genre, traditions that are thousands of years old, that's what makes this painting so compelling, relevant and universal: even without any knowledge of the narrative behind it.

Most GW stuff is pretty , so people assume it's all .

How about this one, certainly somewhat happy and inspiring in that "Let's go sack Rome" way!
