Default I want to remove their thighs.

Pretty much For the roman skins I want to remove their thighs so their thighs don't clip through a pair of shorts. Now I know you can edit the texture file and just remove the thighs that way.

But how would I make it work in the game as a NEW skin not replacing another one as that would make other units look weird.

You extract the diffuse, remove the thighs. Extract the rigid model and change it with hex editor. Rename the diffuse and rigid model and add them to the pack file. This will create a brand new model that you can apply to units as you wish.

Check out the magnar tutorials on hex editing to find out exactly how to do that.

Also check out these videos, they helped me a lot:

Skins are built differently. I don't know how they are built. Look at it yourself in PFM. Not like any other model. I can remove the thighs but I can't figure out how to make it into a working skin. Any other model like helmets or armour is just like those tutorials. But skins are different. They are made up of a head and a body. There's stuff missing that I can find.

All Greeks, Romans, Berber numidians, Greeks and Iberians use the same body skin. All of those except easterners use the same heads. Those skins and heads have different mask files to make them all look different even though its the same base skin. But I have found no way of Etruscan g a headand body together so it will work in the game. Its either a body or a head.

extract a rigid model and look at it in hex, that will tell you what diffuse files you will need.

Then you he the problem of there being no heads. I've edited the diffuse and everything but I have no idea how to attach heads to them and I don't know what the roman mask is called to make it look roman. Its different than every other model.

Does the head not appear in-game? It should.

You know in the variant editor under skins its got a bunch of skins for each culture pretty much and a few extras for other things.

But in PFM in the models_Rome2 table they just aren't there. There's the 1 skin that's doesn't come with a head called spartan skin. Then there's the weird skins like roman1 to roman4 but those were like test skins or something as they don't fit. On closer inspection in the variant editor ALL Greek, Romans, easterners and Iberians use the same body skin as each other. They just have different masks on them they all use the same diffuse. Similar thing with heads. Romans, Greeks and Iberians use the same heads just with different masks. Barbarians all has a range of skins for the shirtless men with different paintings on them.

I could cheat and do it a bit differently. Make a Variantmeshdefinition file of it but that's not how the game does it. And there's a bunch of stuff missing in that models_rome2 table that all shows up in the variant editor. That would be the only way of getting heads I think.

Well the game doesn't mod does it!! Just because its not the way its done in the game doesn't mean you shouldn't do it as a modder. I doo plenty of things differently. Ever modder has different styles do and that's where you become creative in thinking your way around problems.

I'm not sure I understand the that last thing you said but just trial and error it and see what happens.

remember guys that models_rome2.pack isn't the only models pack there are 4 of them, 2 for the types of models you are looking at and 2 for rigids (building ect) just becasue the heads arent in that packfile they could be in the other. i will have alook at a hex later and see if i can shed some light on the head issue.

Found them all. Roman skins arent in the models_rome2pack file. Just in models. All by themselves. For no reason at all.
