Default The Mizar System, Seat of House Libra

    House Libra
    Justice, Law,Veracity!

History of House Libra and the Mizar system

Being since the claming of the Mizar System the ruling dynasty, the european House Libra was always present at the Imperial Court and due to it's position always interested in the expansion of the empire.During the Great Holy Wars their ancestors fought on first line in battle, many of them with religious motivations, which is one of the reasons, why the libra became after the 5th millenium an important part of their rulership. It was mainly motivated by the selfless sacrifice of Lady Celestine Libra and the remainings of her fleet to stop the Great enemy's movement until the fleet of the Empire was ready to reunite and trap one of his fleets afterwards near the Mizar system, before it was able to reach the core worlds. According to later lords of the Mizar system it was a proof of those, who believed in the laws, given by Promethean Creed, as it is rumored that Lady Celestine's suicide command was motivated by higher motives for saving the emperor and humanity, since she was also known as a pius lady.
This belief was one of the main reasons, why Mizar became mostly a place, from where most lawyers and judges came from and why the highest concentration of criminals from the Old Worlds is located in the system. Three moons, the largest of them around the capital planet Protheon, have been turned over the centuries to pure prison cities, guarded by the Legions of the system and the fleet above them. Though conditions in the Mizarian prison camps are compared with the situation in the slaver systems more than attractive, prisoners on the moons have not always a good life and have to bow in front of the Legion's orders. At some periods of Mizarian history, even corruption among the guards had spread on the prisoner cities. Even today House Libra suspects that among their Legions still subjects exist, who abuse the lawful structures of the system for their own advantages.

The main industrial branch of Mizar was, independent from justice and religion, always focused on agriculture and the production of food.
Apart from persons, involved into the courts of the system and religious-motivated men or women, people who work in the industry are well seen and paid wealthy, as Mizar is dependent on the export of their goods. 1/3 of Protheon's total area is covered by huge farm districts, while the rest is mainly the city and the industrial sector.
Other planets in the system are more focused on farming and have small city areas, but due to the growing of population during the millenias, even those worlds are in danger of getting overcrowded.
Only few worlds like Pollux, which is classified as a pure mineral world and mainly inhabits the mighty dockyards of Mizar have not faced this problem, as they are either inhabited or serve as mineral worlds.

There are varios noble Houses existing next to House Libra, most of them being descendants of Libra. Only few of them like Scaleri and Descartes are notable, as the other counts have either high positions inside the courts of Mizar or are consulting the industry without having too much influence to the system.
Apart from the rulers of House Libra, the real controll over the Mizar System lies within the Military, the High Courts and the Food Industry. Since the courts are mostly controlled by House Libra, as it is also the House with the most Lord Justicars in history and the admirals and generals of the Military obey traditionally the noble family, only the industry has sometimes other interests than their overlords. For this reason, Mizar is also mainly profit oriented and always interested in closing contracts with legal institutes.

Not all too surprisingly, the current System Lord of Mizar holds again the position of the Lord Justicar. Though he is known as a loyal and fair man inside the ranks of the Empire, he also had faced a grave past. Especially criminals and corrupt men, who suffered from new investigations by the Mizarian Legions and Police to fight crime, have not already killed the wife of his first son, but also kidnapped once the Lord Justicar's grand-daughter - and though she was freed in time, the three-year old child unfortunately lost both her arms in the process.
During the next ten years after this accident, thousands of criminals and their operations were detected by the increased investigation protocolls and imprisoned and piracy around the system was nearly erredicated. Since these anti-terror-movements, which still are in process in the Mizar system, twenty years later, no further assassination attempts on House Libra were executed, but the actions of the past nearly turned the system into isolation from the other worlds, as former trade partners have been lost due to higher controlls at the system borders.

    Notable planets inside the system

Protheon: The capital planet of Mizar, ruled by House Libra and seat of all important companies and persons inside the system; the living center of the sector
-Argus: Largest organized prison moon in the entire system; inhabits a million of prisoners, sent from several core worlds; headquarters of the Mizarean Legions

    Pollux: Neighbourplanet of Protheon and production facility of all space ships under the command of House Libra;

-Tribunal and Sodom: The other two prison moons; smaller prisoner population than on Argus; controlled by the Legions of the system as well

Various other planets do exist inside the system, but so far none of them is notable.

    The Libra family

    Lord Justicar Augustus Libra
    Age: 67
Appearence: A man with short, blonde hair, already growing silver and a stern look; his left eye is covered by a robotic implant, as he lost it during his youth due to pirates; most of the time his face is well-shaven; he wears apart from formal clothes in white colour also a black robe, reminding the lawful past of his noble House.

Bio: During his youth, Augustus lived in fact a good life, as it was always considered for a young lord of his kind.
Things, however, began to change, as during a journey through the merchant lord systems, the small Mizarian fleet was actually attacked by pirates and the noble family on board was imprisoned. But due to a misunderstanding, only Augustus survived, as the pirates executed his parent and cowardly fled from the battlefield, since they were at least aware that it wasn't a smart idea to murder the current Lord of Mizar. Though they were captured and sentenced to death later on, Augustus' remaining was for a long time as mystery and many persons in the Old Worlds already saw the mid-twenty-year old man already as dead as his parents in their imagination.
But Augustus survived, even though he lost his eye during his imprisoning.
Before the pirates were attacked by a fleet, sent out by the Empire, they had sold Augustus in fear of someone recognizing the man to a smuggler, who sold him to slave traders inside the Slave lord systems. From there on, five years of pain and torture awaited Augustus, who had faced as one of few lords in early years the real brutality of the galaxis, outside of the palace gardens of the nobles.
It was more a random coincedence, that he was saved by a Technocrat lord, who actually recognized the young man from the holograms and freed him for a small ammount of Crowns from his previous owner. A DNA-test and several other checkups finally proved his identity and with relief he was soon welcomed under tears by his younger Brother Antonius, who ruled the planet in absence of it's real lord.

Marrying a woman from House Scalieri, who unfortunately died years later due to an overdosis of medicaments after birth, he was also able to secure his legacy and is now chosen to be the Lord Justicar after the latest crisis in the Mizar system, involving unfortunately his granddaughter.

Since Lord Augustus has recently returned to Protheon, he recieves the message at his office.
"A wonderful evening, mylord", the Lord Justicar said friendly and polite as always, "Or what time is it currently at Cendres I? I always forget that times on other planets don't work the same way like for example on Protheon."

The luxury yacht of Lord Eligio IX of Solarius arrived at roughly the same time as Lord Augustus, having travelled back to the system with him after the first Ministerial meeting on Terra. Landing, the Altaine staff disembarked and forwarded a message to their host's household staff, to notify them of their arrival.

Glancing around, he took in the vistas of Protheon. A pleasant enough place, but he would rather have been on Hectate, surrounded by the mechanisations of the Family and Altaine Industrial. Appearances dictated that he return home as soon as possible.
Swords of the Sea: 1066 has come and gone, the Danelaw torn down and a new kingdom built in the image of its Norman rulers. But with time, wounds heal and what is broken can be reforged. The Danes have returned with steel, and seek to reclaim what is theirs.
The Great Expedition: Pax Anglia, one of Earth's great empires, sprawling across the stars. On their newly colonised planet of Nova Sydney, adventure awaits on the savage frontier - Henry Boyce steps forward to lead an expedition to pierce the Bushlands' wild heart.
Winter War: Finland, 1939. The Soviet war machine has begun its indomitable advance from the east. Of all its neighbours, only Finland stands alone in defiance. Conscript Anton Bezrukov prepares for a quick victory, but the reality is far bloodier...

After some time the man was lead into the office of the Lord of Mizar, when the Lord Justicar felt ready to invite him over to the private meeting.
Still having the opinions about the case of the Solarius system in mind from the Grand Assembly, he decided that this topic needed to be discussed in every detail.
Lord Augustus stood aside his table, when Lord Altaine entered the room.
"May I offer you something to eat, mylord?", he asked friendly, "As a guest of mine, it would be unpolite to not offer you a meal or at least a cup of wine, mylord, before we talk about the current crisis at your system."

Eligio quickly seated himself, giving an outward appearance of warmth and sincere appreciation. Inside, impatience tapped a lively rhythm, ever informing him that he was slipping behind schedule. "You have my thanks for your hospitality, but I must settle for just the wine. I was treated to the pleasure of Protheonian cuisine only a short while past." The staff of House Libra had been most generous during the week Eligio had waited for the Lord Justicar's arrival.

"If it suits your Grace, we should move straight to the business at hand."

    Augustus nodded, appreciating.
"I hoped these words to hear from your side", he said friendly, "The crisis inside your system has even reached the attention of the Grand Assembly -mainly most of the lords are worried about the mobilization of you fleet in relation to the system of Gumpalt. So far I would like to know in detail what is happening right now and know more about this crisis."

"Of course. I have the case's latest updates on my person now. While I have been quartered here waiting for your arrival, I have been in constant communication with my wife who is currently acting as Regent over the system in my absence." Eligio fished a small cube out of his pocket and carefully set it down on the table. Tapping the uppermost panel, a hologram exploded into life directly above. The screen displayed various menus, each containing repositories of cataloged documents. He waved his hands through the first, transitioning the field to a vast timeline of events.

"Our own investigators have compiled this timeline which illustrates the buildup to the attack, as well as some pertinent events that have occurred during the investigation." He pointed to an entry near the top of the list. "We shall start here. Solaris has long been dependent on exports of food from the Gumpalt system, given the sterile nature of our own planets. In the past, Gumpaltian merchant cartels have used this fact to their advantage, fixing prices to artificially inflate our import costs.

"This is relevant because 6 months ago, Altaine Industries began an initiative to undermine this practice by buying out land and facilities on Gumpalt Prime. The objective being to cut out the middleman and service our own needs. This has faced fierce opposition from the Lords of Gumpalt and their franchise vassals. One month ago, an Altaine Industries transport vessel was impounded within Gumpalt territory, under the spurious charge of unpaid tax duty."
With the flick of a finger he sent the screen whizzing down before precisely stopping it with a short jab.

"Here is the time of the explosion itself. A communications satellite near the station was fortunate enough to archive a message dispatched from the Golden Patriarch to that same transport. This piqued the suspicions of my detectives, who have successfully recovered hull fragments of the vessel in question. Chemical analysis and burn indications demonstrate this is the same impounded ship, and it was utilized to carry the deadly charge. Gumpalt is our prime suspect as they have the motive and the means to perpetrate this barbarity."

    The Lord Justicar nodded, understanding.
"It might be an option", he responded, "Or it is maybe just a maneuver of the terrorists to let you believe that the Gumpalt system is the initiator of the attack. The highest priority for now is to solve this conflict peaceful and try to avoid a war, as I will also inspect the Gumpalt system and ask their lord to speak with us as well. The ruling merchant lord should be aware that he might more lose than his head, if we find out that he is guilty and involved into the terrorist attack, so there is as well the slight chance that he is also a victim of circumstances.
Do you know a third party in or outside your systems, who would profit from a war between your Houses?"

Eligio shrugged. "There are many who would like to see my House or Altaine Industries damaged or debased. Success is the surest route to attracting envious eyes." He tapped the cube again to turn it off and took his seat once more.

"Sabotaging Solaris' trade infrastructure would benefit almost all of the Southern Merchant lords directly or indirectly. We have lost several import contracts to Gumpalt, and others to Durdune. Our stock indexes have dropped, which has also given an edge to the manufactories of Castor.

"While I would not put it past our distant Altair cousins to attempt such an intrigue, the evidence does not currently point to anyone but the damnable Gumpaltians."

"Well, investigations might hopefully solve the riddle, mylord", the Lord Justicar said after listening for some while before looking curious at Eligio, "Do we have full permission to support your investigations with our own forces from your side. I fear the Empire will demand it."

Eligio grimaced. "I would prefer not to have foreign warships entering my sovereign space. I am sure you can understand the sentiment. We can provide you with any resources you may need to conduct your work."

"If the Assembly must force the point however, I would acquiesce to a small number of your own vessels. I trust your men. I could not say the same for an Imperial Taskforce that could be drawn from anywhere."

"So far the opinion of the Assembly was pretty identical from what I have heard from several lords, out of several systems: I have to investigate and will therefore use the forces, given by my system and those, who are willing to aid me", Libra said sighing, "I avoided that another Lord or Lady from the Assembly would controll my work as well, since it would undermine my own position as a member of the Grand Assembly, but I guess it will help us on your case. A force will also be sent to Gumpalt, after I got the permission of the system lord to investigate. My men will do a good job while assisting you."

Lord Eligio pushed back his chair and stood, giving a small bow from the waist. "It seems I have much to thank you for, Lord Justicar. I trust your investigation will be fair and prove the veracity of our allegations." He extended a hand to shake. "With this business in hand, I must depart to oversee the situation. I hope to have my men ready to submit their report to you by the time of your arrival."

"Since I will have buiseness at the capital system in my office, I will sent out soon a small fleet with commissioners and forces to strengthen your investigations, before we will then continiue in the Gumpalt system and check your results", he said then, "Remember that I will only trust my own men and women during the investigations before I can trust the results your forces made, as I am bound to the chair of a High Supreme Judge as the Lord Justicar. This doesn't mean that we distrust you and your researches, but I have to stay neutral and can't benefit a merchant family over another."
