Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Nobel laureate and one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, has died. Even though I have only read two of his works he struck me as a master of a wonderfully fantastic and realistic style, and a sincere man and a writer of immense ingenuity and power. He was a champion for Latin America and its culture so I'm sure his loss will be most keenly felt there, and amongst his more dedicated fans than I.

I never read him extensively. I think the only two works I read of his were "La mujer que llegaba a las seis" and Cien años de soledad. There is no doubt he was a giant of Latin American literature and art. He will be missed
Of these facts there cannot be any shadow of doubt: for instance, that civil society was renovated in every part by Christian institutions; that in the strength of that renewal the human race was lifted up to better things-nay, that it was brought back from death to life, and to so excellent a life that nothing more perfect had been known before, or will come to be known in the ages that have yet to be. - Pope Leo XIII

In just a few years we lost some of the greatest contemporary writers of Iberian-based languages and cultures, if not of all time. Never got to read much from him (I plan on reading Cien años de soledad) but he was also a favourite of deceased, and also Noble-laureate, José Saramago, I dare say one Portuguese-language greatest writers in History. Both come from the same time and actually have similar origins and themes. Gabriel and Saramago were major figures in the Ibero-American world. Such losses are great for our cultures.

I have to read more from him.

    May Gabo rest in peace.

God his books were slow. Good to know a place like Colombia had at least someone going for it.
Cien Anos de Soledad sure was depressing though.

He wrote a lot about life in Colombia in the towns and what not. Very realistic writer and very good an making images come out, his style of description was very good.
