    Default Confusing patch 1.05 problem

    Hello Total War Center!

I have a pretty confusing problem (not the usual 'you used the wrong region patch' one I guess):

I wanted to patch my Medieval 2 Gold Edition to 1.05. First I used the German Gold patch (since I am from Austria and play the game in German). This didn't work as I was unable to play the expansion. I found out that this error occurs when you install the wrong region patch, so I looked it up and my game is English (Great Britain). I reinstalled the whole thing and installed it in English (somehow the game is still in German) but I can't install the 1.05 patch UK Gold because it says that it is impossible to install this on a German version.

If someone could help me that would be awesome!

Some info: I have Windows 7 and own a bought Medieval 2: Total War Gold Edition ordered via Amazon and the Package is in German. The Kingdoms.exe-file says it's English (Great Britain).

    Kind regards
    Wuktrio

Does it work if installed and patched in English? Amazon download version has a different version than disc version, too. Which is yours?

also have you tried it with the UAC disabled and the game installed outside Program Files and Program Files (x86)?

I installed the game in English but the game itself is still in German. Also I don't have the download version, I own the disc version and the Kingdoms.exe-file says it's English (Great Britain). I tried to patch it with the UK Gold patch but it sayd this patch can't be installed on a German version of the game.

No, I didn't, I will try that know, but beofre the 1.05 patch I had no problems at all playing the game or mods (I had the Third Age mod and now I just wanted to install the Westeros mod, which recommends to patch up to 1.05. That's why I am even patching.)

Alright. I reinstalled the whole thing with UAC disabled and outside a programs folder. After that I received the message 'A fatal graphic error has occurred and the game will now be shut down.'

At first I wasn't that worried because I received this message yesterday after reinstalling the game before I patched it. It only happened when I opened an expansion and when I went into the vanilla game I just changed the graphic settings and everything worked. Sadly I received the message now also when opening Medieval 2 itself. So I did some research and found various things that should help, but they didn't.

So I reinstalled everything again and now it's excactly the same: Every expansion and the game itself can't be opened and I get the message 'A fatal graphic error has occurred and the game will now be shut down.'

    Here's a list of things I tried:
    Windows XP compatibility
    Open as administrator
    Open with 640x480 resolution

Nothing helped. I had no problems with the game before, I own the disc version and I use Windows 7.
While installing the game I only used Mozilla Firefox to watch a stream, nothing else.

I have no idea what to do now.

If you are trying to get kingdoms.exe to run by itself, it won't. It will have to run with a Kingdoms campaign or mod based on a Kingdoms campaign.

    Does medieval2.exe run okay?
Can you load Brittania campaign okay?

I've had bad luck for years trying to multitask while downloading. Usually end up doing yard work or something until done.

I get the error for every single expansion and for the medieval2.exe.

Also I don't multitaks while downloading because I don't download the game, I don't use the Steam-version, I own the discs.

I understand. I meant downloading as in downloading the patch, not the game.

Look on Sega's German site for the patch. I don't know if it's for Gold Edition but it may solve your problem.

Okay, but which version of the patch do I need?

I own a Gold version and my .exe-file says that it's Englisch (Groß Britannien) (meaning 'English (Great Britain) in German). Installing the German Gold patch didn't work yesterday and installing the UK version is not possible. Should I try the EU patch even though it doesn't say Gold version?

If it was me and Gold German and UK have not worked, I'd try all of them from top to bottom until one worked. The multilingual EU version has been a pain for more than a few over the years.

I just tried the EU patch (not Gold version as there is no EU gold patch or at least I didn't find one) and it didn't work. My Medieval 2 itself crashes with the fatal graphic error while all the expansion tell me I'm using the wrong disc.

Also I can't install the US version because it tells me that I can't install this patch on a German version.

So UK Gold, German Gold, US Gold, US and EU (both non-gold) patches don't work. I'm running out of patches. I use the patches from here, is that wrong or are these patches okay?

Do I have to reinstall everytime a patch does not work or can I simply overwrite it with another patch?

It will not overwrite or at least when I tried years ago. Which version? Guess and be damned. In your case I don't. The reason I said try them all. Maybe US version will work. Stranger things have happened with what CA hired for programmers.

http://forums.totalwar.com/showthrea...ansion-Patches is the most up to date list. Gamershell has worked best for me.

Okay, thank you, I will try one last patch with overwriting and if it doesn't work I will get some sleep and reinstall the whole thing tomorrow.
But thank you very very much for helping me out!

Read through this forum and you will find some with the same Gold Edition that finally gave up and bought the Steam version.

Okay, maybe I'll buy it. But is the patch really necessary for mods like the Westeros mod?

You can try it without the patch but some mods do take advantage of some fixes/additions that are in the patch. The core of TATW seems to written on 1.4 and does not care which version.

Sadly I can't get the game running at all. Three days ago it was fine but now I can't even start the Vanilla Gold version, because I get the fatal graphic error.

Now, it starting to sound more hardware than game.

I have win 7 64bit and the only way I can fool Windows and the game at the same time are,
    1) disable the UAC,
    2) take ownership of C: drive,
30 install and update all drivers
    4) run Windows Update like there is no tomorrow, when I reinstalled Windows last month I had over 200 updates
    5) then install the game as far from Program Files and Program files (x86) as I can, even another drive if I have one
    6) and if it won't start time for me to start checking hardware.
