I've been trying to tie mine that way, but I'm unable to make it in the top of my head, only in the nape.

"The Suebian warriors combed their hair back or sideways and tied it into a knot, allegedly with the purpose of appearing taller and more awe-inspiring on the battlefield. Tacitus also reports that the fashion had spread to neighboring Germanic tribes among the younger warriors, while among the Suebians, the knot was sported even by old men as a status symbol, which "distinguishes the freeman from the slave", with the most artful knots worn by the most wealthy nobles" -http://dba.spearhead1944.com/Suebi/suebipics/Suebi.html#3

So they did it to distinguish themselves from slaves eh?

Yes, only proven and veteran warriors would have it.

Just from looking at the skull dude, it looks like it might originally been to keep hair from either getting in a warrior's eyes while fighting, or getting snagged in whatever armor he was wearing on his shoulders.

This 'Suebi knot' is probably how Latin name for Marcomani tribe was created: Mar - warlike, Coma - hair
Similiar words for COMA are in modern Slovak - chumáč and Czech - chomáč meaning tuft of hair, braid.

That's wonderful and all but does that etymology have any basis in germanic languages?

Marching Men, Marco = March (Marchers, Marching) Mani = Men

Ger = Neighbouring Mani = Men

It could be a derivative of the Celtic in germania or adopted by the Romans?

Genetics has shown us that the Marchomani are the ancestors of the Slovaks. Which makes sense many archeological evidence approves it. The word comes from MAR-marava the region where it stood and Chomani which means braid. Yes Slavs came to Middleeurope because of the Huns. But they were welcomed by the local Slavs that were called Germanics. Romans called Germans people that lived in Germania Hercynia e.t.c. It was not an ethnicity. Thats why they could farm and take such a big territory without killing millions of people.

I've been considering asking my wife's help in braiding and tying my hair into one. If I do I'll throw some pictures up if anyone's remotely interested.

Yeah, I'm sorry. I kinda got mad at how often people make baseless statements on the internet. Anyhow, I apologize for my aggressive reaction.
