To their credit and in defense of the pasta [wild Italian hand gestures], Italy did have an imposing and initially successful Mediterranean navy at the beginning of the war. It's true that they switched sides and Victor Emmanuel III had Mussolini arrested only after the Allies invaded Sicily & Southern Italy, and North Africa had been totally lost, but the Italian resistance did take out Mussolini on their own just before the fascist Italian Social Republic collapsed in the north. As far as I know, though, Fascist Italy doesn't seem to have had the absolutely fabulous style of show trial court proceedings like those of Nazi Germany in the People's Court under Freisler.

The Nazis sure had a lot of balls with Waffen SS paratroopers breaking Mussolini out of prison in the Gran Sasso raid. Hitler undoubtedly thought Mussolini was an incompetent boob, but Hitler wasn't the brightest bulb in the bunch either, and this raid to rescue Mussolini shows that they had a firm bromance.
