Only to realize that you can't upgrade units to their new versions and you have to disband and re-recruit. Is this intentional?

I'm still excited about the reforms. I don't mind disbanding and recruiting, but since Rome 2 allows upgrading on the spot, I wouldn't mind that either.
Can't argue with that, still a lot of fun.
AI gets so many stacks tho :/
No, it is not intentional but for now there's no solution to this problem.
We have something that can overcome it but since it is very complicated to do we prefer to wait if maybe CA can fix the thing themselves (we asked them). The problem is, in fact, that the upgrades at the current stat don't check for restrictions (of whatever nature, even on the same military allowances) before being applied.
I make an example:
Legionaries upgrade Hastati but Legionaries are restricted for the reform. What it happens is that Hastati becomes immediately Legionaries but Legionaries are restricted (not recruitable) and hence you can recruit anything. For what it concerns the troops you already have, instead, they get upgraded to Legionaries no matter if they are restricted or not.
So the best solution would be if CA could just do a simple check for if the unit is restricted before applying the upgrade. There are workarounds that we found, as I said, but they are quite complicated so since we are still in a development stage we have postponed them for the future in the case there's no other solution.
Having said this, however, it's actually more realistic that you cannot upgrade units albeit bothersome for gameplay.
Yes it does make sense for sure.
New equipment and training should take more time and effort, as well as effect experience levels.
Maybe late hastati and like can start with an extra experience boost in order to show that they're not such raw recruits and only re-equipped veterans?
I remember in Rome 1 you could disband an experienced unit and the next recruited one will have the same experience. Are there any way to make this happen in DeI ?
Sort of related to reforms, but playing Athens, after I get my first reform, a bit later I unlock the barracks for Athenai Phalangitai and notice they're weaker both in defense and armor to the generic Phalangitai, with no corresponding higher attack listed. Is that intentional?
I don't mind this system. You reach the reforms much earlier in the game than you do in history, so the fact that it takes another 10-20 turns or more before your old units are completely phased out is fine with me. I reached the Marian reforms as Rome probably around the year 230 BC......it's now 218 BC and I only have 2 stacks of Marian units, but still have 6 stacks of my Polybian units. Unless I suffer some massive defeats, those Polybian units will be around for a very long time lol
The real Marian reforms were 107 BC, so I'm in no rush lol
You can do what I do and make a personal mod that you only use when the moment is correct, and it'll specify the correct reforms with a particular tech in mind.
EG you get the Polynian reform, run the mod until you've upgraded the units, then turn the mod off.
I recall seeing someone else (perhaps it was also you) who posted about that as a decent solution to the situation. Though I suppose this involves some modding knowledge to do editing?
It would be nice if someone could throw together a sub-mod for that and keep it up to pace with DeI, but I think it's fine as it is.
I believe Dresden was testing something with tech/building upgrades. Not sure if he is going to implement. He had some concerns over the AI being able to cope with the process.
Sorry boss, didn't catch the thread. Currently moving across the country. Interested in seeing how CA goes about their fix. I am happy to hear CA is working with the modding community to such a fashion though. Thanks for the response Selea.
I kind of like my idea of giving higher tier units some bonus exp on recruitment. What do you guys think? Is that even possible?
