Default 'Thread of the week' discussion

In a PM to Asterix I said the following

I was pondering possible ways to make it work, but I need to know who is supposed to be voting for the thread of the week.

If the CoP nominates threads then it cant vote on them, because people would just vote for the thread that they nominated.

And if the regular members get to nominate threads then we will have tens possibly hundreds of threads nominated by anyone who has an interest in them.

So either the CoP nominates threads, and the regular members vote (or possibly the civitates?)

    or

Threads are nominated by the Tribs who moderate and are impressed by a thread, and voted on by the CoP

I feel these would be the most effective ways of determining a 'thread of the week'

    lemme know

Thread of the week. Hmm. Nice idea, I think. Although an initial set of qualifications are needed for judging the best thread.

    • Initial arguement presented
    • Interest (views and posts)
    • Topic of the thread
    • Quality of the replies to the thread
    • Debate that developed from the thread

If we look for those throughout the week, than each counciller can propose say one to three threads to be voted upon.

I think that a set of guidelines is a wonderful idea!

And I as well prefer the idea of the CoP selecting the threads, but who will be doing the voting? All of the members or an exclusive group (i.e. the CIVITATES)?

I would support a public poll conducted in either the Seggestus or possibly even the Thema Devia. Make a link to every thread, and have the people vote on what they think is the best thread.

I agree that we, the people who nominate shouldn't preform the vote.

Sounds like a plan to me. But how about placing it in the coliseum like the pic of the week?

I wonder if we could get a subforum in the coliseum to place all of the threads of the week after they have become inactive.

***A new subforum should be built in the coliseum to hold past "Threads of the Week"
*Members of the Council of Peace will each nominate one thread to be voted on.
*They will then create a poll in the Coliseum where it will be voted on for a period of 3 days.
*The winners will be announced and their thread will be featured on the front page for a period of 1 week.

    something like that...

I think outreach is good, so I recommend Thema Devia for a poll. Essentially you can use this thread to disuss nominees. For communications sake if you need anything PM me, email me at amickiewicz@ewi.info or find me on msn @ tmickiew@hotmail.com

I say any member can nominate, it is only to be run by the CoP, not produced entirely

As I stated in my PM to Asterix in the first post, If we allowed everyone to nominate we could possibly have tens or hundreds of threads nominated. There has to be an exclusive group that nominates the threads. That doesnt mean that the regular members cannot vote.

Also...would it be possible to feature the winner's thread on the front page for a week along with the picture of the week?

The problem with having everybody be able to nominate is that we would either have to deal with way to many threads, or not have enough to sufficiently judge.

The problem is however, that a few of us (I know this applies to me) may have no idea what to put forward, as we frequent only a few of the many threads. In that way we may miss out on threads where we are personaly not interested in the issue, even though it is more deserving

I frequent most threads posted in the Ethos and Mudpit for one. If you have a really interesting thread that you are a "regular" at, then nominate it. I don't think that all five of us can miss out on really good important threads in the Thema Devia if we all are active and nominate a few threads between us.

If you aren't interested in a thread, but it still looks like some excellent discussion is going on (you might not participate out of apathy or lack of knowledge in the topic), then nominate it. Easy as pie.

If I'm not interested in a topic, I dont look at the thread, so I have no idea whether it is good or not
But there is only 5 of us, even if I am alone in being an infrequent CC'er, thats one less 'informed' nomination, one fifth of the votes

Can you not find a little time to browse a few threads that look like potential candidates? Even if you are not interested, can you not read over them anyway? I am not interested in plenty of subjects, but that doesn't mean I cannot recognize great writing or a wonderful discussion. Just give a little effort, and it will be fine.

Then consider it as a painful duty that one must do to browse some promising threads for ideas. I don't think it as bad as you make it sound. Just read through a few threads you wouldn't normally read.

On that note, Ragabash has contacted me with an idea I think sounds interesting. He proposes that the Scriptorium and Council of Peace work together with the Thread of the Week idea. The winner of each thread of the week could be copied and moved into the Bibliotheca and Librarians could submit threads they like as well. Which would partly alieviate your fears of not having enough good threads submitted.

    Marvellous idea!

Would there be a subforum for the threads of the week or would they just be submitted like regular entries? I would prefer a subforum because not all threads of the week may be considered articles or even 'scriptorium material'

Well I think that ensures a higher standard.

But I'm obviously going to be biast towards those I find personaly interesting over those the majority may find interesting but I don't, shouldn't the majority get a say in this case?

I think that may be possible. We already have four sub-forums, so I will see what my fellow librarians think.
