Why are they non-playable? Are you trying to squeeze in mass levy units through those streets to fight elite units? That's obviously not going to end well for you.

Ah, yeah well I don't think there's a mod that ever fixed that. It's hardcoded in RTW engine. Cavalry is not good at battles within the streets unless they are fighting in the central square where they can charge. Just gotta live with it

Fighting in narrow alleys - that's the whole point of city battles. One needs to develop whole new tactics for them. If you don't like that, avoid city battles. Sally if you defend, starve out if you're besieging.

Behold! the reason almost everyone tried to avoid fighting a battle in cities.

Not to mention the buildings make co-ordinating your forces incredibly difficult,

As long as you have decent infantry, fighting in the streets is fine. Light infantry and cavalry are not much use though.

The key to success is getting inside the city unopposed. If the enemy is guarding a gate you're trying to enter, then trying to infiltrate there causes your unit to lose its shape and quickly get routed. But if you can get the unit inside the gates first, and then fight, it keeps its shape and formation and fights better.

So create multiple entry points if you can. If you throw missiles at a unit guarding an entry point, that often causes that unit to run away briefly, giving you time to infiltrate.

Once inside the city, send your units through the streets one at a time rather than en masse. Lead with your infantry, skirmishers and cavalry have no place in urban warfare, but this can work for you as well, as it means your opponent's skirmishers and cavalry are largely useless too. Infantry superiority is the order of the day.

Also don't forget that if the battle timer is off (or if you have lots of time), rest your units when you can to keep them as fresh as possible for when they engage. The units guarding your opponent's city plaza will be fresh, so you want to engage them with your own fresh units and not your exhausted ones. That means once you've cleared the gates and are no longer being attacked, rest your troops until they're fresh again before heading for the plaza.

If you're fighting in narrow street (mostly, in non-barbarian cities) you can use the "hammer and anvil" technique
advance with an heavy infantry unit while other units are encircling the area,
when the enemy face you, use another unit for attacking ther rear of the enemy units (the best is a shock troop, but heavy infantry, barbarian mercenaries and even heavy cavarly are acceptable choices)
