    Default Dale Shields

    hey,

i just started to learn Photoshop and atm. i try to skin easy things. So i started to make my own Dalian Shield, because i think most of the shields are not fitting the dale theme. Heres what my Shield looks atm.:Click image for larger version.

Also want to ask for help, i read many tutorials about skinning, but most of them are only about how you get started (which programs/plugins) and very few are about some tricks or what filters you can use get a realistic looking shield. So the question is are there any real tricks or is it just normal photoshop/gimp skills?

You can either create your own texture or take it from free source. For example, Taro's open source:

To make your own textures just go to Google, type there how to create metal, wooden, cloth, chain mail etc. textures. These things are simple to create(thing for few minutes).

When I make shields in photoshop I put a picture of wood in one layer, then make another on top of the wood layer and paint the parts I want painted. Then change the blending mode so it looks like the wood is painted in that colour, try Overlay or Multiply for example. Do the same with any sigils you put on it of course. If you want a layer of grit you can always make a new layer, then Filter > Render and play around with those. I tend to put a layer of Fiber on low fill over my textures, but you might not want it to cover the whole, just the shield, so just erase the parts you don't want.
