Default "Worshipper of ____" Trait: In-Game Effects?

Whenever generals are left in cities containing temples for long enough, they become a worshipper of what ever deity the temple is devoted to (Ceres, Jupiter, Mars, etc). I can see from the trait explanation text that they "govern best in cities devoted primarily to this deity," but other than that no further (detailed) explanation is given.

What are the bonuses conferred by having the general govern a city that is devoted to his choice deity? Does the general acquire better traits? Is there a tax bonus? A reduction in unrest? Also, if I send my general to govern a city that is devoted to a different deity, what will happen? Will my "devout" general suddenly start to acquire negative traits?

The effect are many and varied, when a general governs a city he has a very small chance at gaining the "worshipper of" whatever temple is there and if he builds a temple there he has a much higher chance of getting the "worshipper of a " trait, if you have a governer that has the trait to match the temple it whatever city, he then has the chance to get all sorts of other traits, by building stuff, what kind of government is in place, and all kinds of other stuff varying between different dieties. If for instance you have a Governor that has the "worshipper of ZuesAmmon" trait and he is governing a city with a ZeusAmmon shrine and he just finished building a "ZeusAmmon Temple" or higher, he will have a 10% chance to get Pious+1, 20% chance to get Public Faith +1, 5% chnce to get Religious Mania +1, 20% chance to get Periergos +1 20% chance to get Authades +1. There is no set bonus they're all different, basically you get the chance to get better traits if you govern well when you have a governor with the "Worhipper Of" governing a city with the matching temple.
“The hardest thing in the world is to assume the mood of a warrior. It is of no use to be sad and complain and feel justified in doing so, believing that someone is always doing something to us. Nobody is doing anything to anybody, much less to a warrior.” ― Don Juan
"It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag." -- Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Thanks for the detailed explanation! One other question; is it possible for a general's choice deity of worship to change? In other words, if I move one of my generals that worships Ceres to a city that worships Jupiter and then proceed to upgrade the Jupiter temples in that city am I running the risk of changing that general's religious belief?

There are 3 aspects to family members worshipping deities:

    i) Irrespective of the particular deity worshipped, if a family member is a deity worshipper, he can gain traits related to religion. Off the top of my head, I think there are 3 traits in particular: the "religious" line, the "pious" line and the "mania" line. I can't remember which is which, but these are things like "Reverent", "Respectful of the Gods", "Favour of the Gods" etc.

ii) Depending on the deity worshipped, the family member can pick up specific traits related to that deity. Some deities grant more specific traits than others. For example, worshipping Mars (or similar war deities) opens up an avalanche of traits, such as "Untouched by Fear", "Bloody", "Energetic" etc.

iii) If a family member worships a deity and is in a city with a temple dedicated to that deity, he gains the "Happy People" trait over time (Happy / Very Happy / Extremely Happy People). Conversely, if a family member worships a deity but is in a city with a temple dedicated to a different deity, he gains the "Unhappy People" trait until he leaves.

Spending a turn outside a settlement resets the Happy People and Unhappy People traits.

Finally, a family member can change deities. If he spends time in a city with a temple dedicated to a different deity, he has a % chance every turn of converting to worshipping that deity; and if he builds a temple to the other deity, he has a much higher % chance of switching allegiance.

Family members who are non-religious (who have traits like "Rational Beliefs" or "Irreverent") will not acquire deity worshipping traits, with the exception that very old generals (60+) who are non religious can actually convert to religion in their dotage (aka "Deathbed Conversion").

So much depth, I didn't know they could change their worshiping deity. Thanks for all the info
