Default Two cards better then one?

I was wondering because Iam getting a new mother bord that has two PCI express slots and I was wondering if I get two vid cards for the slots will it make the game run alot faster, do nothing or slow it down. Cause I remeber some times games ask what card would you like to use for a game and I only have one option. With two will it make things easier on my comp or harder. My friend that is a tech nerd told me that two cards would slow down my comp I dont no why he told me but I didn't understand. I was looking for a secound opion. Would it help or hinder my gameing?

You can only "use" both PCI-e slots if the mobo is SLI or Crossfire. Otherwise you just have a primary and secondary card that will not improve gaming at all.

Two cards will "usually" be better than one - depending on your upgrade path and budget. If you are going to buy two cards right away, but your budget is limited, it is probably best if you bought just one high-end card, instead of two low-med range cards, and then get another of the high-end cards further down the road....

But to answer your primary question, if you, like OTZ said, have a SLI/Crossfire MoBo, it will improve it slightly, but not double it or slow it down  In some cases (ie games not supporting it at all) it will make nothing, at most it will improve it a bit. Later on though you could notice a significant performance boost.
