    Default Amount of units limited?

    Hi to all,

I don't know if it's a specific XGM problem, but I have a problem with XGM descr_model_battle.txt. I tried to add 4 new units (3 hoplites, 1 horsearcher) to GCS.
I tested them seperately and after they worked I added them all to export_descr_unit.txt and descr_model_battle.txt.
As result I got an CTD with the following error message:

Generic Error: DATABASE_TABLE error found: max records exceeded from file xgm/data/descr_model_battle.txt

After reducing the new units to 3 (any of them) it worked well again.
    Hope you can help me.

I have XGM 4.1.9 installed on RTW 1.5.

There is a max of 225 entries allowed in descr_model_battle.txt.

Thanks for the fast reply, m8.
Can this be changed by some workaround or is it hard-coded?

There are some entries you can cut. Start with the entries for dogs, pigs, and all the handlers.

Thanks for the advice. How about barb_screeching_woman?

BTW: I want to add horse mounted greek archers to GCS as an answer to eastern horse archers. How non-historical is it?

Very unhistorical I'm afraid. Horse archers need to be trained from childhood and were one of the troop types that the Greeks and Romans found hardest to deal with, and hardest to immitate. They did eventually develop their own horse archers, but not until long after the RTW game period. You can already recruit AOR horse archers, which is reasonably historical.

Yes you can cut screeching women as well. If you are unsure, just do a search in export_descr_units.txt to see if the soildier type you want to cut is used anywhere.

Depends on the type of horse-archer you're looking for by what I've read. Apparently comparatively static "heavy" horse-archers of the Iranian/Persian/Late Roman type who primarily shoot stationary in ordered ranks are relatively easy to train - they featured heavily in late East Roman, Byzantine and settled Middle Eastern (ie. assorted Persian, Palmyrene, Herodian, Arab etc.) armies. When you think about it they're not much different from infantry archers except for the cavalry training.

The steppe-nomad type skirmishers are the tricky ones, I understand. Not only do they need to be familiar with shooting (relatively) accurately from the backs of running horses, they also need a small army of remounts - all that dashing around tires the mounts pretty fast, you see. The Mongols reckoned something like over a dozen ponies per man at the start of a campaign to be good for one example. Obviously, the only folks able to bring along such vast horse (or rather, pony) herds are those who have them to begin with, namely the steppe pastoralists whose very lifestyle is based on the beasts. Sedentary folks simply cannot support such numbers, and instead have to make do with a few grain-fed and therefore rather larger, stronger and faster true warhorses which obviously necessitates different tactics.

The Hellenics AFAIK never developed "native" horse-archers (something of an antithesis of their particular military tradition anyway), but then again they or anyone else for that matter normally didn't have too difficult a time finding suitable mercenaries and freebooters. I've read that during some periods at least Athens actually kept a small force of Scythian mercenaries in the city as a police force impartial to local tribal, clan and family loyalties...
