I like the early weapon fire and nanban quarters. Those Portuguese are awesome tell you get the matchlock ronin. I feel the ronin are superior because of the range. Feels like I can get more shots off with them. Especially helpful with cavalry charges. I just got the arquebus samurai. I have to wait tell I get home from work to try them out though. Has anyone else tried guns only with ottomo or another clan?

Sometimes I just read my stuff later on and I feel like what I typed just sounds ridiculous. Anyways, My Ottomo campaign is coming along nicely. The map has split into 3 factions. Kikkawa, matsuda, and Ottomo are on the west side. East is being held by the hatakeyama (however you spell their name) and Date. The faction caught in the center is Oda and tokugawa. Those two have so many territories together it is ridiculous. Oda would have been completely destroyed if it wasn't for the hatakyema having some territories on the west side. Because of that my alliances with both west and east broke out into war. Since I am on the west I sided with Kikkawa instead of the east. So pretty much the sea's are running with blood and the in land fighting is covered in it. kikkawa and hatakyema and Oda all had the biggest navies. Oda who is a super power is holding his own for now and tokugawa is doing well to. So far they haven't lost much territory but the alliances are slowling closing in. I recruited the honma in the war against date. Hopefully their ships can keep them at bay on the north side. I just feel this is the coolest campaign in a long time. It truly feels like total war.

What I find really hard is spreading Christianity quickly enough in order to free up my occupation armies and have them conquer new territories.

I'm loving the Otomo. I downloaded a Terco pikeman mod aswell so I can pretend I'm having some proper Portugese Terco units on the field in Pike and Shot formation (which I love - I still play Med 2 for the late game Pike and shot fun). Leased land is a terrible investment though. I wish you could renege on your promise and burn it to the ground in an apparent Samurai revolt false flag operation after 10 years or something. Possibly at the cost of being embargoed by the Nanban or something - or having your town attacked by a Nanban ship.

I usually rage quit at about turn 5 though due the the sheer difficulty: At war with 2 clans, a constant negative diplomatic rating due to religion and, if you make the mistake of overinventing in matchlocks, defeat on the battlefield.

Give me the Oda clan any day.

Use the priest. In my previous campaign I sent my priests to the other island so when I get there most I have to conquer are rebel Christian provinces.

The thing is after you get your matchlocks up to snuff your armies barely take casualties. In the beginning I just cut off the ouchi and focus on shoni. Don't make a army of matchlocks at the beginning but focus on ashigaru spam at first while making matchlocks your archers. one you get matchlock samurai you can make an entire army of those guys. I have three cavalry and 4 fire rockets as artillery. That basicly my set up and I put my men in a checkered formation. Even though some friendly fire is sustained more enemies die then mine.

I'm having a blast with the Ottomo.

It's down to me, my last dwindling ally the Chosokabe, and the hordes of Oda and Ikko Ikki. I may be in for a bit of trouble as I finished my last turn, I noticed a full fleet carrying a full stack of Oda troops headed south. Where they land could decide the who thing.

I do so love this game.

I find that with Ottomo, it's especially important to rush the diplomacy techs or everyone will hate your guts forver, so I suggest those having a hard time try that.

For a fun late game comp, try massed dunderbluss cavalry. Dismount them and make a fat line on a hill. They will shred everything to pieces as they get charged uphill (every row can fire simultaneously). Strangely enough, they're probably the most powerful line infantry in the game, though the high upkeep cost means you can't afford to field dunderbluss armies without a powerful economy. Tercos work in a similar fasion and can also form double lines if you have some elevation. They're far less deadly at range but do fight better if the enemy gets into melee range.
