Settlement retinue does not always appears
Hi guys,
I've tried to find some more information about this with the search function, but couldn't find any.
I'm playing SS 6.4 and sometimes (50% of the time) my family members/generals don't get the corresponding retinue of the city they are in.
I'm pretty sure it's some kind of bug or maybe something else, because all the requirements are met: the character has less then 8 retinue, no other character has the retinue (my own character that has it dies in the same city), etc.
I always love the role-playing these things have, not to mention some pretty cool bonuses the larger cities give, so I'm always kinda bummed out when it happens.
I know that you can add them via the console, but it's a hassle with searching for the right retinue and sometimes characters have their name altered, and if you don't know the name it's impossible to do.
I see that I probably should have posted this in the bug forum, my apologies for that. Any help would be appreciated!

Reason: added line for posting in the wrong subforum?

Re: Settlement retinue does not always appears
I don't think its an isolated problem with 6.4, I have similar occurrences in my 6.2 games. Typically happens when I reload a save. I always thought it was just the quirky nature of the turn system in the base game.
For instance, you can skip the plague and other events totally by reloading and the game simply forgets about them, similarly Ive had a tonne of trait increases disappear and not reoccur again. Then there is the game just being down-right stingey by not giving any retinue to a general who just fought a grueling heroic battle.
I too play this game mainly for the role playing and you can use this to your advantage when such things happen. In a situation similar to yours and if the game is being unrealistically unfair or just plain forgetful, I will march my King or Prince down to meet them and bestow a title upon them for services or feats.
You never need to enter the characters name when adding Traits or Ancillaries, simply target them and use this context: give_ancillary "this" dearmad_angers - the same applies for traits.

It seems to me that if they already have another settlement title they can't get a second except by dragging it from another character.

i feel the same way as Saibot.
Not only is it necessary that no other character has the title (retinue), but also the specific character must not havbe the retinue of another city. So if someone is "King of Jerusalem", you can have him in Gaza as long as you want, he wont get the title of Gaza.
As Saibot said, you can put two generals in one stack and then switch the titles between them.
Be careful: If you take away someones title, he will get the trait "Stripped of titles" and lose significant loyalty.
I always look out to have a character in a city who does not yet have retinue. If i want him to be a governor for all his life but take3 away his retinue he will remain less loyal all his life.

Annoying, but try gathering the retinues either with a very loyal general who can lose a point, or a very disloyal and unskilled general who you want to get rid of.

Re: Settlement retinue does not always appears
i tend to use those family members who have a bad characterline from the beginning for this. sending them around to build watchtowers and earning retinues and handing them over to a certain governor (later they die in a glorious fight against rebels).
this way i have some top governors who have several retinues and generate loads of bonuses (bonusses? boni?) in one of my major cities..

How do you exchange or give away routines? I didn't realize there was a way to do that outside of using a cheat.

The holder and the person you want to pass it to need to be in the same army stack(possibly in a town), then you drag and drop from one to the other.

Re: Settlement retinue does not always appears
Hey guys, thanks for all the responses.
I thought that it was possible to gain multiple retinues by being inside a settlement, but this is not true.
A character can only get a retinue when nobody else has that one, and he has no other retinue himself.
