A year and a half after Puerto Ricans voted to become a US state, a bill has been presented to the US Senate for the first step to making it a reality. If this bill passes there will be a binding referendum, that if passed will force the US Congress to vote on their admittance.

I highly doubt it will pass in the House. Republicans are not going to want to give more seats to democrats.

Judging from their blocking of the veterans bill, I completely agree. They also know that admitting Puerto Rico gives 2 free senate seats to democrats and 3 electoral college votes to democrats as well.

As joking as I think you are, it's only ever worked with territories. Besides, I doubt any other region of Alaska has the population to convincingly make its own state without the South to back it up.

You're right! The Democrats were the ones whom were racist to them when they first came off of ships anyhow, might as well consider this an apology. We could give them tax cuts and let them into colleges with half the GPA and SAT scores while we're at it!

Also, don't be so sure on Republicans blocking it. It would certainly appeal to nationalistic sentiment of incorporating new territory with willing inhabitants into our great Union (why does that sound familiar?). In fact, I remember when this came up first in 2012, it was Republicans at the time pushing for action and Democrats saying "let's hold off..." although it has been a year and a half, my memory is fuzzy and I'm too lazy at the moment to go source that.
