China separatists blamed for Kunming knife rampage, results 100+ casualty

Chinese officials have blamed separatists from the north-western Xinjiang region for a mass knife attack at a railway station that left 29 people dead and at least 130 wounded.

A group of attackers, dressed in black, burst into the station in the south-west city of Kunming and began stabbing people at random.

Images from the scene posted online showed bodies lying in pools of blood.

State news agency Xinhua said police shot at least four suspects dead.

A female suspect was arrested and is being treated in hospital for unspecified injuries while a search continues for others who fled the scene, the BBC's Celia Hatton in Beijing reports.

Authorities described the incident as an "organised, premeditated, violent terrorist attack".

The Kunming city government later said that evidence from the scene pointed to separatists from Xinjiang as being behind the attack.

It gave no details and the claim could not be verified.

Some of Xinjiang's minority Uighur Muslims want autonomy from Chinese rule and an end to state suppression of their religion.

As some of you who care about China knows, there is an increasing number of Muslim terror attacks in China in past few months. Since Xinjiang independent movement is connected with Al Qaeda, I wonder may be Taliban feels its position in Pakistan is safe now so the focus move to liberate Muslim land from Communist infidels?

The Government is far too quick to blame any form of violence in China on Uighurs, as it suits its purposes politically and socially. It blamed Uighur separatists for that attack in Tian'anmen last year. But it clamped down on that so fast, getting independent information was nigh on impossible.

The same will happen here. The Government will claim it was the Uighurs, the official media will parrot the officials, and nobody will ever know what actually happened. Which of course, is exactly what the Government wants.

They are pretty isolated from the Islamic World, though that changes when you go further South (Indonesia), West (Turkic people), Southwest(Pakistan).

Yes but mainland East Asian contact with Islamic World was never strong until last century, and even that East Asians still cannot get what so hot about monotheism and all those religious fever - in other words, East Asians think you Christians and Muslims are weirdos, that is all.

That's true. They have geography to thank for that that has isolated them rather well from Western Civilization. It's interesting to me though, that, out of those groups, it seems the Koreans have adopted the most to Christianity once it reached them.

Not to make light of the horrible event, but here is the best part of the article.

"I saw a person come straight at me with a long knife and I ran away with everyone," he said, adding that people who were slower were severely injured.

"They just fell on the ground," he said.

I would say I can't believe the editors kept this end, but I have read too many articles from China Daily to have that high of an expectation.

No where in the article did they say if they were Muslims though. I wonder if this is just an assumption based on previous attacks?

They already did that during 60s; hence why Xinjiang becomes a Northern Ireland in China.

We don't know if they're really muslim terrorists, do we? Though it is of course a reasonable assumption. It could also be two crazies (not that the terrorists would be any less crazy but you get what I mean), if I recall correctly there was a knife mass attack in some Chinese city not too long ago, perhaps these two were inspired by that event.

There is a reason that only less than two dozens of people died, despite the local police were totally unprepared for this.

Imagine the terrorists have automatic rifles.

Or perhaps they should issue a national-wide ban of Islam and expel all Muslims, while they still can.
