The uniforms, the face of the executor and the desperate guy in the top right corner make me think of the execution of von Katte, Frederick's BF4E. Not sure if he was executed for treason or because Friedrich Wilhelm wanted to troll his own son.

Correct! It's speculated that Katte could have been in fact Fred's lover. Not too implausible given Fred's lack of intimacy with his wife and his relationship with Voltaire. He could have been asexual though. As for the reason, Frederick William was an abusive jerk who was said to be a wife-beater and apparently dragged Fred's sisters by the hair in anger. A jerk in general. Probably executed Katte for being an accomplice to his kid's escape attempt and to 'toughen' Fred up. Unsurprisingly, Fred never forgave him for the execution.

He is getting tonsured. After that he takes the vows and becomes a monk and is excluded from worldly affairs or better said the secular circle of magnates and has no rights (inheritance) in this world. It was a popular way to ensure that a powerful lay person stays in exile after having been forced to abdicate, as was nearly the case with Louis the Pious (who didnt take the vows and was able to come back).
