Posts deleted and comment repped! You're right, it's the military repression of a Taiwanese uprising against the authoritarianism of the regime. It led to a White Terror campaign and the establishment of totalitarianism for several decades in the island of Taïwan.

It's Saint Adrian of Nikomedia, not Nilkomedes, anyway, close enough, Cookiegod has the ground.

argh. for some reason the transparency got saved as white. If it had stayed transparent you wouldn't see those lines I drew to try to throw off image search since it's the same colour as the background of this forum. You'll have to live with the ugliness then.

    Correct.

This is from the schism of the Russian orthodox church in the mid-17th century. A patriarch Nikon did some reforms to get the Russian church back in line with the Greek churches, as it deviated to some degree. Theologians believed at that time that this was probably mostly due to translation errors.

Bizarrely enough one of the main differences of opinion were in the fingers. Adherents to canonical christian orthodoxy use 3 fingers when crossing yourself to symbolise the trinity, those sticking to the old way insisted on leaving it at 2.
You can see the boyarina (who's being escorted to prison) and some of the people in the street using the 2 fingers as a sign of resistance.

The schism got pretty wild for a short time. There were villages (!) that decided they would not want to live in a sinful world that uses 3 fingers instead of 2, and sat fires to their own homes with themselves and their families in them. In the long run it toned down a lot, especially since the differences aren't substantial but purely in the rites, but they still exist and their community is alive and well. To top this bizarre story of: 200 years later, this schism was researched by historians of the Russian Imperial Academy of Sciences. Turns out it wasn't so much the old believers that had gotten it wrong, but rather the rest of the orthodox churches had gone through gradual changes in the 13th and 14th century, which the Russians didn't notice until very abruptly ~300 years later.
