Time for some hints!
The victim is considered extremely successful in what he specialised. He belonged to a unique group of 26 gentlemen, 8 of which died violently. In a chronological order, he was the fourth to die, but in the next few months, he was followed by three of his former colleagues.
EDIT: No replies so far and I can't think of any extra hint, so I'll have to give up the answer. The image depicts the death of Marshal Berthier in Bamberg, who fell from his apartment's window. Some suspected suicide, because of the marshal's conflicting loyalties, and others blamed royalist agents for the assassination, but it might have been the result of a simple accident. Berthier was an expert in organisation and logistics and one of the most illustrious marshals of Napoleon's Empire. Lannes, Bessières and Poniatowski died in battle before him and Brune (lynching) Ney (execution), Murat (execution) and Mortier (collateral casualty following a failed attempt at regicide) after him.
Anyone willing to take the turn? I have rep to spare

What lamentable event, or rather its immediate aftermath, is this?

Guernica bombing?
Correct, this is bombing of the Basque town of Guernica on April 26, 1937 by the German Condor Legion and the Italian Aviazione Legionaria at the behest of the Spanish Nationalists in support of their offensive against Bilboa in northern Spain. The work alluded to is, of course, this:

My initial guess was Fukushima, though it looks more like a refinery than nuclear power plant. There was that fire in Indonesia recently, but I'd hardly count that as a historical event. So, essentially, I don't know.

You got it right the first time, that's Fukushima indeed; there's plenty of pics showing that specific fire from different angles and moments
so, over to you

Hopefully this works... and none of you read medieval Latin.

Mathilda de Canossa advocating for Henry IV? (If so, good one!) The Latin may be rendered thusly:
"The king makes a request to the abbot and asks Mathilde humbly"

Bingo
Yeah - it was the only medieval depiction of the road to Canossa I could find with a googling

Neat!
What inauspicious occasion was this?

[Edit] Is it possible that a hint is in order? Very well then, at the very center of this mise en scène, one may note the presence of the reprehensible Adolf Hitler, only he is not in Germany or Gross Deutschland as they (the Nazis) would have grandiosely called it at the time. He is elsewhere in pursuit of a diplomatic policy which ultimately came to no avail as, come to think of it, was the fate of all his policies.

Ok let's see if I got it right
well, at first the black uniforms made me think of our beloved Fascists, but they don't match (though the dude in the center with the side cap made me think of Mussolini ). The other Nazi allied using black as standard were Finnish dudes afaik, so I went that direction.. by searching the net I found connections about this pic and Hitler's visits to Finland in 1942, this one specifically should be showing him in the Immola Airport

Correct! The meeting between Adolf Hitler and Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, the commander-in-chief of the Finnish Defense Forces on June the 4th, 1942, purportedly to celebrate the occasion of the latter's 75th birthday. Arranged just the day before (much to the annoyance of the Finns), its real purpose was to allay Hitler's doubts about the resolve of the Finns to carry on the war and prevent them from approaching the Soviets with any proposals for peace. It was on this occasion that the conversation between Hitler and Mannerheim was recorded by Finnish Radio. This recording survives and in it Hitler discusses, among other things, his reasons for starting the war (oil, specifically Romania's)) and his surprise at the Soviet Union's ability to resist. He makes mention of "35,000" Russian tanks (nonsense) of which he had already destroyed "34,000" (equally nonsense). It is unlikely Mannerheim was impressed.
As to what is going on in the background: Hitler flew to the meeting in his private FW-200 Condor, dubbed the Max Immelmann. The landing strip was too short for so large a plane and Hitler's pilot, Hans Bauer, was forced to brake aggressively. The left landing gear seized, over-heated, and burst into flames. That's the ground crew putting out the fire with extinguishers.

That recording was also one of the few (only?) that captured Hitler's natural speaking voice. All the other times he was near a microphone he was in orator mode. It was accidentally recorded by Finnish radio as they didn't switch off their equipment after the official speeches (or possibly switched it on early, I'm not too sure on the sequencing).
