so I've been doing some researches but the pic is a bit narrow; I can see from the clothes and hairs that this must be sometimes around late 70's and early 80's, but I'm not so expert in cross-country .. I suppose either one or both of those dudes should be famous skiers from that period ?

Aye, that's it! He broke his pole while in the middle of an intense duel to the finish line, where his pole broke and he thus tied for the gold medal. It has led to the infamous saying "Where were you when Brå broke his pole" (Hvor var du da Brå brakk staven?), which is still repeated to this day.
