Default The Conquest of the Red Mountains

For centuries, the Uller-led kingdom has been in a state of near-perpetual war with the Vespera and their vassals. The Uller's latest attempt slightly over a decade ago to seize Red Dunes and Godsgrace was fended off by King Ythan in the Seventh Battle of Godsgrace, in which both Kings were severely wounded and succumbed to their wounds some time after the battle. The decade following the war has been rife with border raids and skirmishes, and several years ago the threat of war returned as the Uller King sent a thousand men to the border in a apparent attempt to intimidate the new Queen of the Eastern Sands, but the true purpose of such a move was unknown to the Vespera.

In Vaith, the Vesperan army under the Queen, her brother, and the aging Lord Marshal prepares for what they hope will be the final conflict against the Ullers and their vassals, having nearly conquered them before for it to be undone in less than a week due to poison, then several thousand men and the Tor were lost trying to hold.

Default Re: The Invasion of the Great Desert

In the command tent at the assembly point, Lucia, Ephraim, and Trystane stand around a table depicting a map of the western half of Dorne, with figurines depicting their present position in Vaith, four in the Great Desert to represent Uller and the vassals of the house, and one representing the Red Mountains."We will march into Uller land, directly for Hellholt. Dealing with the sworn houses of the Great Desert can come after we crush their overlord." "Are you sure that is wise, sister? They could harass our force as we march or strike at Godsgrace." "I'm certain Lord Allyrion left a suitable garrison, my prince. There is the possibility striking at their overlord can lure them all to one location where we defeat them and end, hopefully once and for all, the Uller menace." Ephraim nods to Ser Martell, while Lucia topples the Uller figurine. "Completely. I'm sure there is some house we can raise to rule Hellholt in place of the Ullers, and at swordpoint the vassal lords will accept this change of regime." "Or find a Uller that is pliable or amicable towards you, my Queen. Destroying the House, while deserved, may turn their King into a martyr for the vassals to rally to avenge, leading to further issues."Lucia sighs, and looks outside as several lords arrive, bowing to their Queen. "We shall see, Trystane. I will not be merciful now only to have them betray us later." The other lords begin voicing their opinions, and after several hours of debate, the army began it's march towards Hellholt.

Default Re: The Invasion of the Great Desert

OOC: It's your choice, although for the numbers involved, it may be simpler just to do a one flank battle. Whatever you decide, post your orders and I will do the rolls.

Default Re: The Invasion of the Great Desert

ooc : I'll keep it a single flank then for simplicity.

    Orders -
Archers and the 1,200 horse archers/light cav are to harass the enemy formations. The remaining 2,022 light horsemen will divide into 1,011 on each side of the infantry body and alongside 300 heavy cavalry, will seek to either engage the enemy cavalry or flank the infantry formation once engaged. The light infantry will divide into three groups, consisting of 975 each. Two groups will flank, the third will be with the heavy infantry and polearms to charge the enemy infantry formation. The remaining 66 heavy cavalry will divide into three groups of 22, to serve as a guard for each commander.

Default Re: The Invasion of the Great Desert

    Battle Rolls

    Archer/Horse Archer Attack:

    Vespera Archer Attack: 3,585 v. 2,250
    (19 + 4) x 3,585 v. (4 + 2) x 2,250
    82,455 v. 13,500

50% of Uller infantry and archers are killed, the rest rout from the field

    Uller Counter Attack: 8,594 v. 675
    (17 + 4) v. (1 + 2)
    1,731,555 v. 2,025

Uller Archers do minimal damage (< 1%)

    Cavalry Battle:

    2,922 v. 1,397
    (6 + 4) v. (1 +2)
    29,220 v. 4,191

    Vespera Victroy
Uller Casualties: 50% killed, remainder rout
Vespera Casualties: 4,191/29,220 = 7% of participating Vespera cavalry are killed (22 Heavy Cav, rest light cav)

In a relatively quick battle, the Army of Queen Lucia Vespera makes quick work of the Uller Army. While overall casualties are fairly light for the Vespera infantry, the Vespera cavalry suffer slightly more casualties.

OOC: Your casualties should only be in the cavalry. Your rolls went so overwhelmingly in your favor for the archer/infantry battle that casualties there were less than 1% (0.11% to be exact), so it wasn't worth actually calculating the losses.

    Hellholt

After the battle, Lucia, along with all her vassal lords and a large retinue of horsemen ride into Hellholt, the smallfolk of the desert town hiding in alleyways or their houses in fear, thinking the Vesperan host was going to sack the town, but nothing occurs. the party ride up to the keep of House Uller, where a young man in armor bearing the sigil of House Uller, and Lord Qorgyle stand waiting for them with a guard of twenty spearmen, who move to guard their lord. For several minutes, a tense silence befalls the two groups, as the guards prepare to attack each other before Qorgyle and Uller move forward and kneel. "Hellholt and House Uller surrender to your rule, my queen." the Uller lordling states, while Qorgyle remains silent. Lucia dismounts and motions for the two men to rise. "Very well, I accept. I presume you are Harmen's heir?" "Yes." Lucia pauses for a moment, considering her original idea of executing the entire house, but decides against it. "You shall keep your position as overlord of the Great Desert..and shall swear fealty officially to me in two months time at Sunspear. The same goes for your vassals, Lord Uller." Uller and Qorgyle nod. "You are dismissed." Lucia adds, after which both men return to the Uller's keep, to send word to the new lord's vassals of what has occurred and to go to Sunspear in two months to swear fealty to the crown.

"Sister...are you sure this is wise?""Keeping Uller in charge is a risk, but considering the alternative is marching to each keep in this region and forcing them to accept my rule at swordpoint..I would rather take the risk and know if they do betray us, we can simply march on Hellholt once more and remove Uller from power." Ephraim takes several moments to think on his sister's words before nodding as the two watch their army set up camp outside of Hellholt for the night, before preparing to march back east in the morning, the campaign finished.

    ooc : -3 stability.

    Orders

    Skyreach

-If the enemy does not retreat to their castle
The archers will advance to skirmish with the enemy, attempting to bait their infantry into a charge. The Infantry, with pikemen in the center in spearwall will form an inverted crescent formation, placing the heavy infantry on the flanks of the spearwall, and light infantry on the wings along with the cavalry. When the enemy attacks, the light infantry and cavalry will attempt to envelop the enemy, flanking them from both sides.

If they do retreat, prepare a battering ram, ladders, and small artillery pieces. Archers will harass the defenders with arrows.

    Starfall

Similar to the Battle of Hellholt, the archers will advance to harass the enemy along with any light cavalrymen that have javelins/bows(?) before the infantry engagement. The light infantry will divide into three groups, two to flank with the cavalry formations, the third to be placed with the heavy infantry and polearms directly engaging the enemy infantry. Cavalry will divide onto both flanks and seek to destroy the enemy horsemen before attacking the infantry formations of the Starfall army.

At Hellholt, the armies of the Kingdom of Sunspear had divided into two hosts. Lord Marshal Martell, leading his house's levies along with the Uller and portions of Ghost Hill's levies north to attack Skyreach or besiege it should Lord Fowler decide to remain in his keep. Along with keeping the High Lord of the Red Pass from marching to reinforce his liege lord in Starfall, which would be assailed by the rest of the realm. Having encountered no ambushes or delaying tactics, the two armies arrived outside of their respective targets, waiting to see if the enemy would retreat to their keeps to force a siege due to the hosts of Sunspear enjoying a two to one advantage in the field, or for a reason only Dayne and Fowler may know.

Field Battle or Siege Battle Roll: 1-5 is field battle, 6-20 is siege battle

Rolled an 11 so it will be a siege battle.

After seeing the overwhelming enemy force that is sent against him, rod Fowler wisely decides to retreat his arm behind the walls of Skyreach

    ===================================================================

    Starfall:

The forces of King Dayne are arrayed out before the Vespera Army. Though they number less than half of the Vespera soldiers, the honorable King Dayne refuses to call a retreat from the field of battle and decides that the fate of his kingdom will be decided through the honorable combat of a field battle.

Some of the more daring men shout insults as the host watches Fowler and his men retreat into their keep, while Lord Marshal Martell, Lord Martell, Lord Toland, Lord Uller, and Lord Qorgyle quietly watch. "Send word to prepare ladders, a ram, and perhaps engine or two." Trystane says to a nearby knight, who rides off to carry out his orders. Qorgyle scoffs and points at the fortress. "One good volley of fire arrows and we could probably burn them out!" "It's not all wood, Lord Qorgyle." his liege and former Prince replies. "It would be more useful for the archers to silence or divert theirs while the ram advances." "Indeed." "Bah, our storming troops could take that like we used to take your border castles!" "Which would then easily be retaken due to the heavy losses of your troops in the storming of a castle." "Provided the storming troops managed to hold the Keep." "Or even get in." Qorgyle mutters a curse to himself, grumbling afterwards while Lord Uller nods. "That is why I believe our leader here plans for us to assault them in a more tactical formation." "Precisely. My lords, we shall let the engines and archers harass them for a few days while we plot the best course of attack, and then strike. For now, we should make a fortified encampment and send patrols around..I don't know if our Queen managed to engage Dayne or not." The lords nod, and the group of five men move back from the under construction siege lines to the camp.
    ------
With Starfall behind Dayne's assembling men along with the Torrentine river, and the ocean behind the Vesperan army, banners bearing a sword and star on purple or the silver and red sun and moon on black float about as a sea breeze blows across the battlefield, kicking up some dust. Ephraim had taken up command of the left flank, riding alongside the Cataprachts and Knights sworn to Sunspear. Lucia commands the center and right, positioning herself and her retinue in between the two flanks, with Lord Allyrion as deputy commander in the right and Sers Dalt and Santagar for the center. "If Trystane succeeds at Skyreach and we defeat Dayne here, Dorne will be almost completely under the sun and moon..Yronwood will surely kneel instead of face the fury of a united Dorne. Emphyria will marry a Dayne, and the assimilation of the Red Mountains into my realm will swifter. Uller still chafes under my rule, as to be predicted..." she thinks to herself. "The War of the Dusk and Dawn, I believe is what my brother called this, Lord Allyrion." The Lord of Godsgrace adjusts his turban to nod. "It is ironic, though. The Dayne King claims to be the Sword of the Morning and yet he is the furthest west of all the lords of Dorne. Your house are the opposite." Lucia laughs, then smiles at Allyrion. "That's why it is humorous, my lord." Allyrion nods. "Shall I take up my position..and will you give a speech, your grace." "You may, and no, I won't. The men know their duty and why they are here. Why waste words scrounging up falsehoods about the Daynes to inspire a fleeting increase in morale?" "Very well. May the Warrior strengthen your arm, your grace." "The same to you, Lord Allyrion." The lord rode away from her position with a few knights, to take position on the far end of the right flank, while Lucia quietly watched the assembly of troops, before signalling for the archers to advance..

I await your further orders for the siege.

    Battle of the Torrentine

    Vespera v Dayne
    Missile Exchange

    Vespera Archers v. Dayne Infantry
    1,800 points v. 3,555 points
    (3 + 3) = 6 v. (2 + 2) = 4
    10,800 v. 1,4220

40% of Dayne Infantry are killed by the Vespera Archers.

    Vespera Infantry v. Dayne Archers
    7,000 points vs. 900 points
    (10 + 3) = 13 v (1+2) = 3
    91,000 v. 2,700

26 Vespera Infantry are killed (10 Light Inf 8, Heavy Inf, 8 Polearms)

    Cavalry Clash:
    6,024 points v. 2,835 points
    (6 + 3) = 9 v. (3 + 2) = 5
    54,216 points v. 14,175 points

Vespera Cavalry easily defeat their Dayne counterparts
50% of Dayne Cavalry are killed, the remainder rout from the field
25% of Vespera Cavalry are killed in the ensuing battle.

Vespera Inf + Cav vs. Dayne Infantry
    11,480 points v. 2,133 points
    (7 + 3) = 10 v. (8 + 2) = 10
    114,800 points v 21,333

The Dayne Infant despite putting up some fierce resistance are unable to withstand agaisnt the combined Vespera assault.

House Vespera triumphs in the field of battle near the Torrentine River. Casualties are as follows:

    Vespera Infantry: 20% Losses
    Vespera Cavalry: 25% Losses

Dayne Host: 50% of their Army has been killed, the rest are routed or have surrendered. King Dayne has been captured as well.

Default Re: The Conquest of the Red Mountains

If the ladders and ram are completed, the heavy infantry is to assault the walls with the ladders along with all but 300 of the Light Infantry. Those 300 will man the ram and attempt to break down the gate so the polearms may attack the enemy.

ooc : Does King Dayne have any children?

  18. #18

Default Re: The Conquest of the Red Mountains

Ladders and walls are ready. I will roll the siege later today.

    Dayne Children Roll:

    Age of King Dayne: 1-5 = 20, 6 -10= 30, 11-15 = 40 , 16-20 = 50, rolled a 18 so King Dayne is 50 years old
    Number of Children: 1-5 = 1 son/daughter, 6-10 = 2 sons/daugthers, 11-15, 3 sons/daughters, 16-20 = 4 sons/daughters

    Rolled a 16, so King Dayne has 4 children - 2 sons, 2 daughters - ages between 14-20.

  19. #19

Default Re: The Conquest of the Red Mountains

    Siege of Skyreach Rolls

Vespera Infantry Assault on the Walls:
    2,928 points v. 495 points
    (8 + 4) = 12 v. (8+1) = 9
    35,136 points v. 4,455 points

The attack on the walls is a complete success and the defenders on the walls are completely annihilated. However, Vespera casualties number 10%.

    Vespera Assault on the Gate:

3 D*20 rolls to determine if the gate breaks. A 1-10 means the gate fails to break. A 11-15 means the gate will break with one more blow. A 16-20 means the gate will break immediately. So if roll number 1 is a 11, it means that it needs in the next two rolls a 11 or higher for the gate to fall.

Rolled a 13, 8, and 15 respectively. The gate of Skyreach is broken on the third successful blow of the ram, although it does not really matter since the walls have fallen.

With news of the fall of the gates and the walls, the remaining defenders of Skyreach retreat to the inner courtyard to make there last stand. All the heavy cavalry and heavy infantry have dismounted and will count as their respective dismounted counterparts.

You can either choose to continue the attack or RP with the defenders for there surrender.

Default Re: The Conquest of the Red Mountains

A single knight rides ahead of the infantry that are beginning to surround the remaining defenders. "Men of House Fowler! You have fought valiantly, and defended your homes as honor dictates. But this day has clearly been carried by our forces, with the walls and gate of Skyreach firmly in our control. The Lord Marshal wishes to extend an offer for you to surrender to us now instead of dying in a last stand. Skyreach will not be pillaged or looted by any men of the army, and like the men of House Uller that now fight alongside their old enemies.." the knight gestures behind him where men bearing the sigil of Qorgyle and Uller on the shields stand alongside men of House Martell or Toland. "..you will be granted amnesty by her grace for only fulfilling the oaths you had taken to House Fowler."

ooc : If they flat-out refuse, the infantry are ordered to attack.
