Default Recruitment options for Roman games

In the early game my Roman army usually has 4-5 units of Velites, 2-3 Leves and the remaining Hastatis. When I can get Equites, I trade them for the Leves. In the later game, I add a siege/ballista unit, and just recruit the various Legionaries. I feel this provides the most flexible army setup that can face any enemy on the battle field. I almost never bother with auxiliary spears or other units.

Is this a good army mix? What changes would you suggest, if any.

Research Manipalar Organization asap and recruit some principes and Triarii. After I research Manipalar Organization I usually focus on civil tech for a while, I just don't like to get legionaries too fast as I like the early period units. For my early armies I usually build something like this:

    1 general (mounted)
    2 equites
    4 triarii
    6 principes
    4 hastatis
    3 velites

If I want to run siege units I replace equites or velites with the siege units I want to bring.

Good suggestion. I usually try getting the legionaries ASAP. But I get your point as well. Makes the game more interesting.

Just field the early Praetorians, they are absolutely beasts and got a reasonable upkeep.

Legionaries have a higher recruitment costs/upkeep than hastati, and hastati tend to perform fairly well for the early-mid game. Personally I'd drop the leves and leave those slots free to add in any interesting auxillia.

What kind of auxillia do you recruit?

Usually anything that a region specialises in. Iberian Swordsmen, Peltasts instead of velites (they have better melee abilities), better/faster cavalry. Hoplites/spear infantry are a good addition if facing a cavalry heavy army too. A unit or two of war dogs can be useful. Have them hang back and then have them release their dogs near the end of a battle, they are good for chasing down routing units and, if you keep the handlers out of combat, regenerate after every battle.

Most cavalry Auxillia you can find are probably a good bet. Rome's own cavalry are pretty lacking, generally, compared to basically any other faction. Auxillia are also the only way for Rome to gain access to ranged cavalry, archers, or slingers. So those can also be good choices for Auxillia.

I usually keep 10 units of various types of legionaries (usually 8 basic/armored and 2 praetorians), 6 units of cavalry (4 melee and 2 shock) and 4 units of auxiliary archers.

Auxiliary Noble Horse from Gaul is I think the best cavalry Roman Armies have access to. I also like Socii Equites Extraordinarii, they look glorious in bronze and are available quite early in the game, though not nearly as effective.

There are of course Cretan and Syrian Archers which became essentially irreplaceable in my Roman armies.
