Default The Macedonian onslaught can they be beaten ?

Well now. There I am as poor little Galatia. I was booted out of Asia Minor by these bullies. As you can see I am hanging onto existence. I have one army (that's all I can afford) and I can actually beat the phalanx with it if I can get my cav behind them.

But as you can see there must be 50,000 troops just waiting......

Can anybody beat this lot ?

Remember if you beat one stack your army will be reduced in size and good troops will have to be replaced, whereas the Macedonians can field whatever they like and the loss of 3K stack will not deter them.

Turnover per turn is about 5K. The only allies you have is the Romans (too far away to do much) and the Ptolomies who are loyal but useless.

    Suggestions ?

Do all that you can - Just sit tight and hope for the best.

Raise a full stack asap and you should try and lure the macedons away to beat them 1 by 1.

That's a sound strategy but I don't have to they come at me in two's if not three's.

Do you mean attempt to open up a second front ?

Oh dear god. Thats alot of military power.
I know the brutii during campaigns always have alot of smaller armys normally led by captains spread about.
If you just take 1 massive stack and sweep through all of them, then possibly.

Reminds me of my first campain as the julii. I was a noob, and my half stack stared on at at least 12 brutii stacks. Diplomacy to the rescue!!! Thanks to my extremly talented diplomat, I had 12 new armies! My advice, diplomacy. Try a ceasfire, bribe, or get another faction to attack them.

everytime ive come up against those odds (in the mods i play) i always have several armies of my own to fight them with, not just one

personally it seems like a bit of a hopeless position..ship ur army off somewhere else with a family member and go establish a new empire where it isnt so tough?

Retreat to your settlement, make sure you have alot of archer units and galatian swordsmen that can hold the phalanx of the walls, and hope. And with a little help of the enemy AI you will resist their attacks for long enough to launch a counter attack with another army... In some other way.

best way is to go into fetrile areas with forests, and put ur general and some troops in an opening clearing, wait for there troops to come in, and spring your troops hidein in the forest,

not reccomended if fighting aganist 2 staks or more

    what mod is that anyways?
We, your protectors, will stand between the enemy and you. We will take upon ourselves the blows the enemy directs at you. We shall stand our ground until you are away or until our strength utterly fails us. We belong to you, and we will keep you safe or die trying.

Okay then, get lots of archer units and sit tight in your settlment. When they do finally besiege you, I doubt the AI is clever enough to attack with all stacks at once

You should be able to fend them off. Meanwhile, you could start expanding south-east towards the ptolemies. Get your economy to a decent level (ports, traders etc...) and launch a small counter attack at one of their settlements. This should draw them back and you should keep a very strong garrison on your western frontier. You should try to assassinate as many family members as possible as this will quite severely limit their combat capacity. What BD are you playing?

It all depends on what difficulty level he is playing at. If he is playing on Campaign hard, that will frankly, FAIL.
    Otherwise, that might be doable.

If I were you I'd face them like a man, stop being a coward! Face them! Be brave! But most of all, be cunning, fight as many ambushes and forest battles as you can. Use those mountains to your advantage... they're a real help when defending, trust me!

Lots of foot archers in towns close to macedonians - around 10 units put defensive on the walls, 1-2 missile cavalry to lure enemy units close to your walls - and rest of your army should be on the other directions and fight vs weaker enemies for expansion you can hold defensive vs macedon easily, but you will need resources to advance on them, that is why you need additional cities to take from weak enemies.
Each turn when the enemy makes siege on your town - make sally, put archers on the walls and 1-2 mounted missile units will lure enemy units closer to the walls - devastating archer fire will make macedonians loose lots of its troops and then retreat.
It will be hard game but it is still winable I think
If you are afraid to fight, or no chances to expand at your present location - take some of your generals, part of the army and move far away from macedonians to make new homeland, to grow your power and come back when you are ready The problem is... you wont have much time to build your new empire... macedonian war machine will follow u ))

    Yes doomed.

I tried to open up a second front, and actually managed to take Sparta off them. It didn't last long ; a few turns later three stacks arrived and threw me out after one successful defence.

Think I'll restart this one witrh a new opening strat !

    LOL

This is what I would consider "fighting like a man"!

"Situation is desperate, we are surrounded, enemy is numerical superior, ammunition nearly used up - now we are going to attack!"
