Swiss voters vote yes to restrict EU immigrants!!

Swiss voters have narrowly backed a referendum proposal to bring back strict quotas for immigration from European Union countries.

Final results showed 50.3% voted in favour. The vote invalidates the Swiss-EU agreement on freedom of movement.

Fiercely independent Switzerland is not a member of the EU, but has adopted large sections of EU policy.

Brussels said it regretted the outcome of the vote and would examine its implications.

A Yes vote of more than 50% was needed for the referendum to pass.

The BBC's Imogen Foulkes in Geneva says the vote has shown up traditional divisions, with French-speaking areas against the quotas, German-speaking regions divided, and the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino firmly in favour.

A Yes vote means Swiss ministers will have some tricky explaining to do in Brussels, our correspondent says.

The swiss proposal that was aproved, was to limit EU citizens to enter their country. In that view, i guess the treaties, might not be relevant anymore, that is why EU is reviewing them i guess.
As the legality of it. the swiss can do what they want obviously, and they arent part of the EU to boot. Even if its a civilizational step backwards policie, in the eyes of EU members. Naturaly this kinda of things goes both ways. What the Swiss will lose, im uncertain, but if embargos happens, i guess they will lose something.

Two reasons: a lot of border workers (i.e. people who live on the other side of the border but work in Switzerland), as a matter of fact one in four worker in Ticino is a borderer; this is combined with one of the highest unemployment rate in Switzerland. The second reason is also due to immigration proper: as Ticino is the direct entry point from immigrates who transited through Italy (i.e. who reached Europe through Lampedusa and Sicily) that topic tends to be disproportionally covered in that canton.

Also, once again, the vote was on immigration as a whole, not specifically the EU; though in Ticino the topic of Italy border workers definitely had an important impact.

A good point you made. I mean, I am open to people moving around and making a new life for themselves, nothing wrong with that, but one has to keep their national identify in some way and try to crack down on the freeloaders who not helping out, especially tax wise.

Skeptic view: this is barely news. Legal wrangle as they may lose access to the common markets as they have stepped out of it effectively or they may gain a special provision. It will take a long time.

Swiss voterns violated the basic principle of human rights. IMO, military action should be taken against Switzerland in order to restore democracy and freedoms. Too bad Obama is such a pussy to do this.
