two months later than originally, since you asked. i think its sometime around 2030 by now isn't it?
Please rep me for my posts, not for the fact that i have a Pony as an Avatar.
I think most of the team either gave up with the mod. Gracul, who I'm assuming is the mod leader, hasn't been on since September. It seems the other team members are either gone or are working on other projects now.
The Historical Improvement Project submod seems to be turning into the successor of Stainless Steel though. It would have been nice if they had released the unfinished work before abandoning the mod though. I would say Titanium would be a successor mod as well but it is going painfully slower and slower with time as well and I don't think it will make it.![]()

I've got an idea - we should start a kickstarter campaign. I mean, so many people want to see a next step on the SS path (whatever you might call it), maybe we could fund some modders lives to get it done.
Not possible due to legal reasons. Base game is copyrighted, some of the mod resources might be too. Or specifically released only for non-commercial use.
None of the mods are technically copyrighted, but if you use them on TWC without the authors permission you might get some trouble. The fact that the base game is copyrighted is irrelevant in this situation, they are not releasing a standalone game.
and they're not profiting off the mod itself but rather it's donations for support so they can release the mod to everyone, not just to those who paid. But yeah, that's something that would have to be decided by the TWC staff and the mod team that's still alive.
The best way to help is to volunteer as a modder.
Speaking as a modder myself, I don't think it's necessary to make donations. I do this because I really like the game and really like improving it. It's also just really relaxing to me.
When I don't want to do this anymore, I don't think donations/payments are the real deal here. Because I think the best motivation is just somebody really liking what he's doing. When you pay somebody to mod a game he doesn't like anymore, you probably won't be happy with the results.
The best thing you can do in my opinion is support the active submods right now by giving feedback and trying them out.

I didn't mean to make that suggestion to start trouble. It's just clear to me that there are a lot of people (I see random, new people asking all the time) who want to see the next iteration of SS (or something like it, which I think is a key difference) and it is also clear that this mod has, most likely, reached its end. I'd just love to see that fan support being galvanized to some useful end. Personally, I'd gladly pitch in a buck or two to any worthy mod, regardless of what it might be called. Until I get something other that a notebook, though, I can't volunteer (I can't even play the damn game right now). And just so that it is clear, I know that there are many other worth mods that deserve attention.
Also to me it seems the Medieval period isn't too popular amongst the Total War modding community.
The only other full Europe, medieval mod alive right now is Dominion of the Sword and it's no where near done after seven years of development. Maybe some mod team will come along and make a full, historical 1100-1500 medieval mod or we'll finally get one if M3TW ever happens (and actually has modding capabilities and isn't horrible)
Well for what it's worth I greatly appreciate all the time and effort all the modders have put into SS and truly any mod for that matter. You've all made the TW series immensely more enjoyable for all of us, not to mention done some incredible things and allowed for a more historical approach which can actually serve to educate people as well.
Anyhow, many many thanks for it all.
I agree with MWY, we mod when we can because we enjoy doing it. When it ceases to be enjoyable we stop or move on to other projects. Donations won't change that.
I took a long break from here a couple of years ago. I'm back chipping in here and there. But a SS7.0 ? Do we need one ? The game engine is getting very old, although it is much easier to mod than the warscape engine, from what I've seen. I'm not sure that SS can be pushed much further in terms of new game content, without a massive influx of experienced modders and I don't see that happening. Yes new custom designed settlements would be great, but somebody will have to spend a lot of time learning how to make them.
And finally, well to be brutal, there's not exactly a lot of people still visiting the Stainless Steel forum.
No, for now, I go along with the argumernt that it's best to support those sub-mods that still in active development, encourage new people to learn how to mod, so they can, at least tweak the games to their requirements. And let's see if we can make the game as stable, enjoyable and challenging as possible for those who still want to play it.
I agree with MWY and Used2BRoz. Speaking for myself and in addition to MWY comment, my best "reward" as a modder is to see how people enjoy playing my mod. And for that, donation/money will never be able to afford it![]()
