    Default [Discussion] House Cup

    Come on guys! Let's get this idea off the ground. Here's a proposal on how it might look.

    The houses are in competition on who holds the house cup. Houses acquire points for the activities of their members (detailed below). Every month the points are added up and the house cup is awarded to the house with the most points. We can have some real fancy graphics in a thread listing the houses and their points as well as a big graphic of the house cup with the current house holding it listed.

    Group Membership Points
    Member is...
    Hexagaon Council Administrator = + 10 points
    Tribune = + 7 points
    Moderation Mentor = + 5 points
    Moderator = + 3 points
    Content Director = + 5 points
    Content Staff = +3 points
    Gaming Staff/Clan Overseer = + 5 points
    Gaming Staff = +3 points
    Vault Staff= +3 points
    Technical Staff = +3 points
    Curator = + 3 points
    Magistrate = + 3 points
    CdeC = + 1 point
    Founding Member (joined in 2004) = + 5 points
    Veteran (member for five years or more) = + 3 points

    Activity Points
    Wins 1st place in a competition = +10 points
    Mod download reaches 10,000+ = +10 points

    This is the layout I thought of while I was doing it. All names for now are placeholders cuz I suck at them.

    • Scoring: Every tournament has a points value, with winners gaining some and runner-ups gaining a smaller amount. For patronization, every percentile of growth within a house amounts to one point. Results are posted quarterly and the highest-scoring House wins the cup.
    • Sign-ups: For each tournament or challenge, House representatives must enter their House and their contestants.
    • Governments: Houses can choose a 'political system'. This is mainly for RP, but it will tend to indicate their system for determining representatives.
    • Representatives: Depending on the government of a House, founding members may be automatic reps and/or the sole reps. A House might elect its rep(s) or make it open to volunteers. To be recognized by the CAT, a House must have its own social group, thread in the House Cup subforum and at least one rep. Once these are done, it becomes official.
    • Coalitions: In floodgate tournaments (ones without a cap on number of contestants for each House), any House can form an alliance with another, which allows their competitors to count as part of the same team as far as scoring is concerned. Coalitions have a limit: They cannot become larger than the largest competing House.

    Organizing:

    • Layout: Subforum for posting quarterly results (stickied), house threads, tournaments and challenges (duels between houses).
    • Initial competitions: House Heraldry Battle (special rules: Isolationism – no alliances). Every house has to submit heraldry for itself. A transparent vote is held (no voting for your own House!) to determine whose wins.
    • House types: Classic Dynasty (Founder is of the original generation of citizens), New Dynasty (Founder permanently broke off from an existing Classic Dynasty), Princely Line (Sub-House of one or several others).
    • House sizes: Tier I (1-25), Tier II (25-50), Tier III (50-75), Tier IV (75-100), Tier V (100+). Both of these classifications are used, which results in having Houses be called for example a "Tier II Classic Dynasty" or a "Tier III Princely Line".
    • Needs:
      We need an artist who can make headers for each of the tournaments. We also need to work out with staff how much publicity we can expect for the launch. It's obviously something which would start best if lots of people know about it already.
    • Questions:
      Many citizens are likely affiliated with more than one House. For the sake of flexibility and clarity, we should have it that each House assemble their teams in each tournament and communicate them to the CAT.
      Other issues are loose citizens, who do not have a recognized house, and those who don't want to be a part of the ones they're already associated with.
      We might want to have a warm-up period of several weeks, during which members without a house can form their own, or get themselves adopted.
      For some tournaments and challenges, we'll have to agree on a maximum number of contestants for each House, with any extras being on the bench in case of AWOL competitors.

    I updated some of the Houses' pages on the wiki a while ago. With Derpy free now (we were actually just talking about it when I saw this thread, lol) I'm sure we could get back to it, but any more help would be welcome.

    Dammit Stealth, Inkie and I were just having a conversation earlier today about how we were going to get an outline ready before talking to Hex Oh well. I'm actually glad that I didn't have to start the layout for the point system (I wouldn't know where to begin). However, at a later time, I'll come up with some ideas for the point system (take it or leave it of course). What I was and am first going to do was to come up with a list of houses, their membership, and what house (if any) they split off from. The reasoning for this is that there might be a preference for either many or few houses. I'll comment on the first two posts at a later point (class in ten minutes).

    Quick question about this:

    On the surface, it looks like someone like myself would be worth eight points (Moderator and Content Director), not counting the competitions I have won. But since I also serve in other Content roles (I'm a member of the Facebook team, Gamer's Gazette, and as a Librarian), would that be worth an additional three points as Content Staff? There's a similar overlap also with Veteran and Founding Member, as all Founding Member's are also Veterans.

    And this seems like an awful lot of information to try to keep track of, especially since things like CdeC and Content membership can change really quickly.

    The only function houses ever had was in the bad old days of political chaos and duplicity that preceded the imbtatorship. Therefore this must be some sort of Harry Potter inspired crap. Great if we are a JK Rowling fan site but really, how is this going to improve the site for the vast majority of members and to attract new members to us?

    I don't see what's wrong with a forum game for citizens only, no one is forcing anyone to participate in it or anything. It's just some fun competing between houses.

    I see this as a great opportunity to build community and increase activity here on the site, (and therefore increase site traffic) and just as a simple way to have a bit of fun.

    I don't know if there should be a big prize for this. I envision at as mostly for bragging rights with your house holding the cup.

    Yes, people involved in multiple roles and activities here on the site would stack their points, encouraging people to be active and involved here! Although, on the idea of giving points to "Veterans" and "Founding Members" I think it makes sense that those are exclusive and you don't get double points for doing the same thing.

    It can be a lot of information. This would be up to a representative of the house to keep up with, and representatives from other houses to make sure it's accurate and not inflated.

    I like the idea, and hopefully the incentive system works as planned. However, given that, as some have mentioned, most don't really identify as the member of a particular House, relying simple bragging rights as motivation might be wasting the possibility for more attractive incentives, like rep, a temporary medal (the cup displayed as an award while it is held), special username colors, etc; maybe all three. Something flashy (the more flashes and the greater the flash, the better) to bribe people with more useless internet prestige Also, if the Cup competition is particularly successful, this might revive some of the old house rivalries, and it may be wise to consider whether the cost of political intrigue and other silliness is worth the benefit of increased participation in the running of the site (I think it would be worth it, but something to bear in mind, nonetheless; and that assumes this Cup idea is implemented and successful). Also, some user or users would probably need to be tasked with the gathering and maintenance of the necessary info (there are alot of citizens and several houses after all), and these users would need to be independent of any house to prevent a conflict of interest, and held to standards that will decrease the influence of bias for or against a particular house for any reason. Another thing is, if this Cup idea really takes off, role playing might easily become a problem (after all, the King of the TD era wasn't a fun time for mods and Hex IIRC).

    My two cents.

    Of these facts there cannot be any shadow of doubt: for instance, that civil society was renovated in every part by Christian institutions; that in the strength of that renewal the human race was lifted up to better things-nay, that it was brought back from death to life, and to so excellent a life that nothing more perfect had been known before, or will come to be known in the ages that have yet to be. - Pope Leo XIII

    My purpose for this was to bring new purpose to the houses, and had nothing to do with Harry Potter (I think the Harry Potter universe is retarded since no one ever thought of using a gun against Voldemort or his allies).

    Have an official points review say every three months perhaps? A build up to "Changing of the Guard" {Buckingham Palace}, "Changing of the Cup"....

    Since some houses are enormous and others are'nt perhaps "All-time" & Current" catagories? For example if the competion is every three months the winner would be the house that is most active during that particular three months... that way the size of the house would not matter, just the current activity level.

    Have Ronin on the stand by to take out those pesky Hexers, Tribunes, and Original/Founding site members from opposing Houses.........

    Indeed, if you check out my proposals it mentions scoring being reviewed quarterly. Also, tournaments either involve a cap on the number of members that can participate - so as to negate the advantage of the juggernauts - or houses can form coalitions so as to be able to compete with them. Additionally, it might be a bit awkward but I thought using percentages would be the best way to measure points for house patronization-rates. With badges it's harder to balance, though.

    I was a supporter of this the first time it came up and I support it now. Rehabilitating the Houses into mini-communities is something I'd like to see happen, though it might require large-scale rationalisation and pruning of the Houses as they're pulled from mothball, as TWC has changed almost entirely since they last had any relevance to their members.

    Seems like an excellent idea, I wholeheartedly wish that the House Cup idea will get off the ground at some point and that it would be a popular thing which will not get forgotten after the first few months.

    The point collecting seems to be for passive activity on board, such as being a CdeC counsillor for example , but would there be some tournament style events too at some point? One that I could think of now would be about joining one of those MCC tournaments if they are still around.

    Yep, and Inkie gave some great ideas on this as well. My first post was just meant to kick things off and in no way was meant to be final. So, any and all feel free to post ideas you may have on how this might work.
