Hey guys, I'm back with more Medieval 2 challenges. This time I'm taking on the mongols as the Khwarezmians late campaign Vh/Vh, Gracul AI, Byg's Grim Reality IV, limited activity, and disabled real recruitment.

Give me your predictions. Will I triumph or crash and burn?
Medieval 2 Total War Blitz Record with the Turks - 14 turns!
Medieval 2 Total War Peasant Campaign Challenge with Egypt - 112 regions - 27 turns to spare!
Next challenge : Total War: Shogun 2 - Ikko Ikki Legendary Campaign - No agents, temples, loan swords.

Nice to see you back on your roots. You need to get BGR V for extra challenge. And a few other submods might help too, but I cant remember them atm.

I didn't even know V existed. How do I get it?

My bet is on death by overextension. You take some impossible to resist low hanging fruit only to spread your forces too thin and then get shafted.

btw, I'm really interested in following this if you try it with bgrV.. I tried it myself, but the strategy I came up with doesn't work 100% of the time: I can survive only if a good part of the mongol armies go north - which doesn't always happen! You'll probably need several tries to do it, especially if you have never played with bgrV. Good luck and have fun!

I've been dying to see a BGR Let's Play.

Not that I'm judging, but why would you turn off RR, if you're looking for a "tougher" challenge?

Seconded. I even asked the same question a few weeks back in the BGR submod forum and even Byg himself doesn't know of one.

I thought RR made it easier. It gives you access to other culture's troops. BGR kind of makes the whole thing irrelevant though.

Since I've started with BGR IV I don't think i can switch to V now. maybe next time.

I've watched all 5 so far, really enjoying it. I find it funny that you're reluctantly chivalrous (reluctant chivalrist?).

I have to ask, though - I watch a lot of Let's Play videos of Total War games ( M2TW being my favourite, so thank you for doing this, they seem to be rare compare to other games in the series), and very few LPers seem to use control groups and hotkeys - why don't you use them? Likewise, you don't seem to use Guard Mode and I'm wondering why.

I'm just used to using these, and I'd like to know if I'm missing something ( using the UI faster? control groups ineffective? etc. )

Hi. Given that you are using IV, which is much easier than V you should probably go here and add in these missing BGRIV-E files which contain some high difficulty features that are not included in the version of IV that is in stainless steel 6.4 by default.

BTW, the 5000/10,000 crusade cost feature is just to join (personal money cost and treasury cost), not per turn as you suggest in your video.
The main financial costs you need to worry about for movement relate instead to the foraging damage cost system when marching across your own territory.

Did he? I didn't get that impression. Seems he was pretty clear about it esp. when had to abandon-rejoin the Jihad...

I think I was pretty clear that it cost that amount each time I joined the jihad. I had to have my shah join it twice because the turks besieged Baghdad and that's what I was referring to.

Also, I think it's too late to go V now that' i've started. I'll keep it in mind for next time.

I missed that then. I did skip some bits. I assumed you were thinking that a second turn on crusade cost you another fee, but I think you are now saying your leader left the crusade and rejoined? How/why did you do that? Guess I will have to rewatch it.

Edit: watched the bit I missed. Weirdly enough in ten years of this game I never noticed the abandon crusade button. I have always seen the crusade through or lost the army trying.

One of the great things about this game, there's always more to learn.

That is weird indeed - abandoning and rejoining crusades has been a famous exploit employed by weaker players. I always thought you devised the costs for joining a crusade in BGR IV to bar just that exploit.

Maybe I did and subsequently forgot, like in my first multiplayer game. I had always avoided spies opening gates as an exploit, so when another player did it to me it came as a shock- as far as I was concerned it was not a feature.

But anyway, I think the crusade joining fee was actually to deter the overall crusade exploit of benefit without cost to the player, particularly as the crusade feature mainly benefits players, rather than the AI- as you can see in the OP's video.

Talking of exploits, see how easily the AI is confused by fort exploiting in the OP's video? Hence my recommendation to add back in the missing bgrIV files which shortens movement and raises fort costs to 15000. It does the same to the AI, but as a human player is the prime exploiter of longer movement (which enables the player to perform more actions per turn than the AI) and forts, this fix benefits the AI.

Take the fort scenario, in video 5 I think. A player would take all the AI's forts in a single turn, but the AI generally gets one action per turn so you can see the AI cannot pass the forts, whilst the player is free to dance around him.
