Default Down with the Clone Armies

    http://au.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/m...ml?sid=6159360

    I like this part

Meanwhile, when you upgrade a unit's armor and weapons in the campaign game you will be able to see these upgrades on the unit models themselves on the battlefield. So an upgraded unit of crossbowmen will look quite different from a regular unit of the same type of crossbowmen.

    They've really overhauled their units.

PS. I loved the concept of Clone armies (the Clone wars are one of my favourite stories) but that's irrelevant in this game

This is going to be awesome. Now individual soldiers in a unit get scarred during a battle....I see alot of GPU stressing going on!

Awesome read. Since they state that the shield(and weapons I am assuming) are separate parts of the model, I wonder if they will have unlimited amounts to be modeled now allowing for tons of different models. Although would that cause more chaos for the computer though as it would be rendering even more stuff?

I never had that big a problem withe the "clone" units in Rome.
Dit it really bother you back then?

Never bothered me actually but as the interview stated their trying to make thier units more "individualized"

Let's also not forget this isn't the era of Rome where everything is standarized. I believe everyone makes or buys their own equipment and has their own types of sheilds.

It'll be interesting to see if a soldier can interrupt others, or the fighting is always one on one...
In the Silicy video, I don't think a soldier can interrupt another as it maybe too much for the computer IMO. It'll probably be the front soldiers of the line engage the others, then once one of the guys falls, the next guy moves up.

No no. Dont expect too much.
The fighting will be like in Rome and what we saw in the videos is probably edited.
This is only my impression but i dont think they do those fighting combos all the time.
There are 2 or 3 combos and sometimes a soldier will do some combo,
like knocking someone to the ground and finishing him off while helpless.
But most of the fightings gonna look like Rome.
They talk pretty big about adding in combos and I haven't heard any of the people who played the game have noted anything similar. I think you should wait until the demo comes out before being pessimistic.

They've noted in some of the articles about soldiers losing limbs and falling down accordingly to how their hit and such. I'll see if I can dig up the article.

It didn't bother me either. RTW had impressive visuals, so clones were the last thing i'm looking at. I was busy marveling at the reflections and glints on the soldiers armor and how you can watch as individual soldiers go at.

the clones didn't bother me either. But otherwisw the battles were kind off dull. Soldiers were just beating air and doing their stupid dance moves and people fell down.. The battles seem to be far more interesting in Medieval 2. Good animations, real contact with the enemy, and the non-clone soldiers, of course. So it's gonna be fun.

But remenber that its probably not going to look as good, as in the videos.

Propably not, especially on my system.. But if there's really an animation where a soldier strikes his sword through an enemy, then it can't be bad, can it? Well, we'll see when the demo comes out.

Hey, someone said soldiers get scarred. Does that mean we'll have generals traits be reflected in their face? For example, would a general with the trait "scarface" look like one, and when his hair/beard turns gray, will it be gray on the battlefield as well, or just in his portrait?

Yeah, there are no long clips in any of the trailers, it's like watching a hollywood movie - they switch cameras every ½ second so that you can't see how fake the fight really is. It's going to be interesting to see the fights in the actual game. Whatever happens, it's got to look better than in RTW, when everyone was just standing in a defensive stance even when a hundred feet away from the frontline, because they were stuck behind all the other soldiers. Oh, will this happen again? Or will soldiers try to surround the enemy this time?

?? Not new, since beggining they say that MTW will not have clone armies...

How can clone armies not have bothered you guys??

It annoyed the crap out of me to have those cloned barbarians in RTW (it was less of a problem with romans of course).

I'm quite serious when I say that out of all the new things in this game, the non-clone bit is the one that surprised me the most and also what I'm most excited about! Then again, I am a bit obsessed with graphics

Agreed, hidden behind chainmail and armor, the clone Romans were acceptable. Shirtless, identical brunette barbarians were not so acceptable, or inconspicuous.

Honestly, i'm not so impressed with the variety seen in these clone armies. Three unique heads for an unit of 80 men is an almost futile effort, but I am expecting that modders will be able to add in even more options for army customization.

Well, i wasn't expecting huge variety in the non-clone units of M2Tw, because even 3 different heads in a unit is 3x more work for the texturers for a unit, so 3x more work needed for all units. Im ure you can see where im going with this.

It concerns me too. Mods will have to be less wide in their scope.

But I wonder if extra model parts (or texures) can be switched off or at least duplicate the same model/texture to each slot and thus have no more work (except a little coding) than RTW.

Well from another thing i read, it looks like weaposn and shields this time will be seperate from the models, and be assigned to units via text files so that part should be easier. And hopefully yes we can just have 1 set of everything for some units to cut dev time down for mods.
