Default Sub-Mod to make Broken Factions a threat on the world map.

So this sub-mod will be making factions that do nothing a threat on the World map when they are NPCs.

The fallowing are the list of Broken factions, and the changes that would be needed to make them a threat.

    Wizzrobes.
    1) Give the Vigjaro settlement to the Wizzrobes.
    2) Make them start with more units.

    Sheikah.
    1) Give the Kakoriko settlement to the sheikah.
    2) Make them start in Death stance.
    3) Give them more starting troops.

    Realm of Twilit.
    1) Changes their AI commands, for that they Make a Mirror Gate on turn one.
    2) Changes their AI commands, for that they actually use the Mirror Gate.

    Stalfos.
    1) Until the Stalfose are fixed. make all their units recruitable by some building or an other.
    2) Make them start with more units.
    3) Give the Audorn settlement to the Stalfose.

    River Zora.
    1) Give the Fort of Wings settlement to the River Zora.
    2) Make the River Zora spawn on the world map on turn one.
    3) Make the River Zora able to recruit their mid and high tier units. at this time they can not.
    4) Make all their units that would've spawned from turn 1-5, all spawn on turn 1.
    5) Improve their economy.

    Ikona.
    1) Give the Ikana settlement to Ikona.
    2) Start with more troops.
    3) Make Ikona spawn on the world map on turn one.

sounds great but there's some problems, some of those faction can never be destroy, so how will you fix that, also the wizzrobe are a faction the recruit through religion will you fix that so they can recruit other cities, three the sheikah work with tkoh as spies and assassins and don't become their own faction unlit hyrule defeat how will that change, and the stalfos have to recruit be some means that makes sense so how going change that and make it make sense at the same time.

strawars90001, please check your writing before you publish it. It is unpleasant and sometimes hard to read, and I am sure others would appreciate your efforts too. Just for the sake of more pleasant interaction. I can understand a few misspellings and letters in wrong places, I do it quite often too, but severe lack in sentence structures without clear indication of ending and starting a new sentence is exhausting for the reader.

Eldren, nearly all the changes you mentioned are fairly easy to do. Have you sometimes opened for example descr_buildings.txt-file? If you have, it seems logical and according to my memory there is even a short description of how the file works at the beginning. I have not examined the start conditions file, whatever it's name is, but i'm quite sure it is pretty logical too. So shortly: I suggest you look at the files yourself. To help with it the TWCenter has impressive amount of guides and tutorials for M2TW in the Mod workshop-district. I am sure you understand them after reading them properly.

However if you are totally opposed to the idea of doing something, I might just look at the recruitment part of your request and see if it takes over 10 minutes to do. Most probably not, but if it does, I won't do it. I have personally little to no interest to work for this submod. Your most loyal and interested modder is you yourself. Modding at this level is not difficult, so I suggest you learn it.

I think these faction should work different when played by the player and when played by AI; For example, the non-played sheikahs could have a script that defend the hyrule kingdom from invasions until a fixed turn when agahnim show up; in this case, the hyrule kingdom would be more dificult to conquer. The wizzrobes could rise when the hyrule kingdom have less settlement than the starting one, so the game would become somewhat unpredictable. Althought the twili really needs much work; maybe just building them by script the mirror gate and giving them extra money and troops and see what they do.

For the stalfos I was working in a script that when controlled by AI, they will show up and attack the more powerful faction [I did it in the simplest way possible and somewhat scripted; it may be predictable at some point]. will that work?

EDIT: I forgot that I made these stalfos to show up at turn 35, so more or less some faction would be powerful enough for the stalfos.

    Twili are easy. Just add
    building
    {
    type hinterland_mirrorgate mirrorgate
    }
To their capital city in descr_strat.

You'll notice that an annoying historic event pops up every turn because in campaign_script, a block of code labelled Twili Tele is missing the following...
    terminate_monitor
You'll also notice that any general that passes through the gate has a buggy animation in the overworld. I've filed a bug report for this.

For Wizrobes, I'm just going to give them Vigjaro from the start. Weakening Hyrule by taking away a settlement (and cutting them off from Vigjaro Glade and Snowpeak) has the secondary balancing feature of making sure they don't demolish Gerudo while the Gerudo are locked in a tooth-and-nail war with Twili.

I'm also planning on modding the Wizzrobes heavily so that they
    A) Have an AI that focuses on priests and religion
    B) Have a unique religion: "Goddess Heresy" or simply "Wizzrobe" or something.
    C) Add a monitor in scripts so that when a region is over 50% Wizzrobe Religion, they will expel the garrison, join Wizzrobe, spawn a few Acolytes for defense and cause war between Wizzrobes and the offended faction. (Otherwise the stupid AI factions could potentially just be wiped out without knowing what's going on. This is especially unfair to the dumb AI because some factions don't even have priests).
    D) Modify the Wizzrobe's relations with Sheikah so they are no longer allies, and are instead possibly at war.
    E) Remove the "Request Vigjaro" event.

I'm going to give the Sheikah a bunch of spies from the start near Kakariko and make it so that they spawn free units from any city that has a spy inserted. Not sure how much work this will take. If it turns out I need a separate script monitor for every settlement, I won't bother. I'll also make it so that they don't give captured settlements to Kingdom of Hyrule, and I'll give them Kakariko, but make them a vassal of Kingdom of Hyrule.

I'm going to make the Stalfos at war with all "Goddess Worship" factions from turn 1 and bolster their starting armies a bunch, and make sure that the "recruit fallen enemies" script works for the AI faction. That should do the trick. I'll put them near Ordona so Hyrule is not swamped with 100 different enemies.

River Zora, I'll simply bolster their starting armies a bunch.

Ikana, I'll give them a constant stream of 1 or 2 units per turn as long as the Termina Fissure exists.

NOTE: I've already modified a bunch of stuff in the game to tweak it to my liking, so... yeah, I don't know how sharable my mods will be unless you guys don't mind a bunch of other changes.

No problems here. I like what you guys are planning on doing. But can you 2 work together on this mode instead of separately? I think it will turn out better. and there will not be 2 different types of the same mode.

    What do you to think?

It'll only take me a few days if I put in a really dedicated effort. As I said before, I made a lot of minor tweaks in already, so our versions might not be compatible. When I finish, I could put my H:TW up for anyone to download.

    My changes so far are:
-Changed religions to: Goddess Worship; Guardian Deity Worship; Demise Worship; No Worship; Majora Worship. Changed church icons and pip icons and rebalanced regional religions. Darknuts, Lizalfos, Moblins and River Zora worship Demise. May make Stalfos worship Demise as well.
If anyone can tell me if the Ooca and Majora scripts are working properly, please do. If not, I would like to add in a pope mechanic and crusades.

-Changed religious buildings so they work differently. Happiness provided is now dependent on religion level in region. Labrynna, as a secular and pragmatic culture, is able to build any religious building, but they can't build "churches of no worship", so this adds the element that they can build religious structures to appease locals, but this will only create more converts and lead to more unrest in the long-term. The AI is utterly incompetent with this, but there's enough happiness-boosting structures in the game that they can get by regardless by throwing cash at the problem.
-Changed OOT Elemental Temples, so that they each provide access to factional elite units when regional religion is 100%. These regions by default are 5-20% tainted by unbelievers at game start, so an effort will be needed to put in to unlock them. (IE Ruby Guardians for Fire Temple are unlocked at 100% Guardian Deity worship, but 20% of Gorons in Death Mountain Crater worship Demise at game start, and 80% worship Guardian Deities).
--Hylians can recruit Triforce Vanguard using a similar mechanic. I removed the script trigger that spawns/despawns them when Hyrule Castle Prime is/isn't under siege. Having them appear only so situationally felt like a waste of a good unit type.
-Added in mercenaries, since I believe only the Geru mercenaries actually worked. The rest were dummied out. It was really bad for the Darknuts to not have Zuna Crossbowmen, since their faction would constantly get destroyed by Gerudo horse archers skirmishing them to death. I also rebalanced the mercenaries so you don't have a billion cheap mercs available for hire a few turns into the game.
-Rebalanced a lot of units in export_descr_unit, and their recruitment pool in export_descr_buildings.
--For instance, most notably, Iron/Bronze Knuckles were so weak that they couldn't even defeat a squad of Town Guard or Miniblins. I more than doubled their squad sizes, increased damage and defense a few points, give them extra HP (Bronze= 3HP, Iron = 4HP), and made their attacks deal area damage and sometimes launch enemies in the air. Knuckles are still slightly weak for their cost and training time, and not at all competitive with equal-cost Darknuts, but the Gerudo are supposed to be a hit-and-run faction, so it's fine as it is since this is a unit that's outside their specialty--at least now the knuckles can defeat low and mid-tier infantry. I also, very conservatively, doled out or removed a few points here and there on units that I thought needed it. For instance, Miniblins were absolute beasts for their cost. I think it was because their squad was large, and their individual size was small, so there'd be more miniblins packed together and attacking each enemy at the same time. So I reduced their morale and removed their spear bonus. So now while they could still cut down a squad of Hylian Town Guard, they'd probably chicken out and run away instead if something spooks them.
-Rebalanced unique buildings, for instance the Labrynna Factory was garbage. It was supposed to save you money, but it cost so much you'd never see a return on that investment, or at least not unless you built every bloody building in the roster. So I reduced the cost to 1000. Ordona's super-farm was an absolute beast, so I ramped up the cost to 15,000. Unique buildings only give bonuses to their native faction, so you get nothing if you conquer these buildings.
    -Changed the building tree so:
--Castles are independent of town size, so you could upgrade all the way to Citadel in a Hamlet.
--The reason for this is that military structures like Blacksmiths and Barracks now depend on Castle Size, not Town Size. So you essentially have an "economic tree" and a "military tree". I just thought this was better gameplay.
--Also, barracks are no longer dependent on Smiths.
    -Rebalanced buildings in general.
-Fixed some obvious errors, like some faction leaders (IE Queen Ambi and her free General; the River Zora Leaders, etc.) didn't have the "General" Anscilliary, so their command and loyalty were atrocious until I fixed that. Some towns couldn't build barracks, Hylians couldn't build Mounted Knights, Darknuts couldn't upgrade villages, etc.).
--Fixed that damn bug that the towers would destroy siege equipment in 1-2 hits that made siege assaults impossible.
--I also removed ballista/cannon tower upgrade options for every faction, because some factions have no anti-wall artillery, so these sort of defenses shouldn't be available. I don't think tower upgrades were intended to be left in anyways.
--Tower shots are now essentially as strong as ballista bolts, so I think this is a nice balance, since they can actually destroy siege equipment if you only try to march up to the walls with a single engine, but can't take out everything if you have the foresight to bring multiples, unless the defender gets lucky with lighting them all on fire.
-Purely aesthetic changes to the text files, so they reflected flavor text I thought was more cool or realistic. IE. Libraries were changed from "centers of learning for civilians and soldiers" to "centers of learning for society's elite".

I've been at this for a few days, so I'm sure there's a few things I've missed. The good news is I bug test and balance test obsessively after every change, so it all works well.

Oh, and for the labrynna factory, it is some of the cases when having a misspelled thing doesn´t crash the game. Let me check if I have the correct one (I think I modded it without having the exact original or I errased it, I dont remember). I will reedit this post in a moment.

EDIT: Yay I found it. I had it erased but thankfully it is an easy fix to remember:
The original bonus of the factory is "construction_cost_bonus_wood bonus 20" and it does´nt do anything. You should change it to "construction_cost_bonus_wooden bonus 20" and it will work. Thanks to the person, I don´t remember who, that discovered that!

Huh, really? I tested the factory out and it actually does reduce the cost, even though it doesn't say it does. I guess having it actually state its purpose would be better though.

You need to go through descr_walls and tweak the stats for all Arrow Towers.

Really, as easy as that? Some time ago, in order to fix that problem I changed the weapon from "arrow" to "tower_ballista" or something like that. Maybe I didn´t test changing every stat.

Bleh, I give up. Game crashes turn 2 and I can't figure out why.

Logs just tell me that there was an error with the Termina fissure for some reason, but I've A) Never touched Termina Fissure, B)Reverted the files back to working versions and it still bugs out.

M2TW is just too much of a pain in the ass to mod. I might try again later, but I'm annoyed as hell at losing all my work and having absolutely no way to figure out what went wrong.

The fisure thing will always be an error and will alway don´t have anything to do with any crash. Thought there is a file that traumatized me for life: Did you modified or added anything to the file "historic_event.txt" [Or other file in Hyrule/data/text] ? This file is incomplete from the beginning and it will cause a crash playing as the twili, kokiri, hyrule, wizzrobe, sheikah or building a ruin excavation. In that folder [Medieval II Total War\mods\Hyrule\data\text] there are two kind of files: the files that end only with .txt (example "historic_event.txt") and the files that ends with .txt.strings.bin (like "historic_event.txt.string.bin"). The .txt file is used for modding and the game will create a new .txt.string.bin file if the .txt file is modified in any way; Then the game uses the .txt.string.bin file to read the text in game.

The problem, at least for a case that bugged me and got me traumatized for life, is that in the original HTW 3.5 files the file "historic_event.txt.string.bin" was fine and makes the game work, but the file "historic_event,txt" had missing texts that would cause crash. This is ("historic_event.txt.string.bin") has every message of the campaign map (introduction, earned general, subrosia discovered, ask npc to join, ruins rewards, river zora invasion, etc). The file that has some messages missing is the file "historic_event.txt", but it will not cause any problems because the game only uses the "historic_event.txt.string.bin", BUT if you modify or add a new message in "historic_event.txt", the game will create a new "historic_event.txt.string.bin" that will not have the missing messages in "historic_event.txt" and... DO YOU KNOW what the game does when he calls a text for a message in the campaign map, but it is missing ? It crashes, easy as that just for some missing text, and it will crash exactly in the instant when the message should pop up. It took me hours to figure out that problem and to identify every message shown in the campaign map called by "campaign_script.txt". So it´s kind of a punisher for the submodders/curious guys. I hope it does not happen with any other .txt message thing. There is a file for the name of the buildings, there is another for the names of the heroes, there is another for the usual messages like declare war or improved relations, and pretty much anything that has a text on it. I really hope that is the only case, because is very difficult to detect the missing text, and is harder when you don´t have the proper program to do it (like me).

Either way, you should look for the "hyrule.script.log.txt" and "M2TW.system.log.txt" in the last lines. It may reveal some missing file or misspelled thing. Sorry for the long text, I hope it helps somehow.

ARGH. You hit the nail on the head, I altered historic_event.txt

Would you happen to have an unmodified copy of historic_event.txt.string.bin that you could send me?

Thought there is a file that traumatized me for life
Don't even laugh. This is 100% how I feel. First, I suffered from being screwed over by the map.rwm cache, which cached a buggy map until I figured it out. Then I got screwed over by the Windows 8 Cache, which cached a buggy file until I figured it out. Now I got screwed over by this text string file.

I mean come on, do they really need to translate plaintext-to-plaintext? Does it save, what, a whole millisecond?

But at any rate, I did have one problem with the scripting: there's no way to test a region's religion % for a foreign religion. You can test for the owner's religion %, and the NEIGHBORING region % for a foriegn religion, but not the region itself. I suppose that the Wizzrobes could recruit by...
    if neighboring religion > 50 wizrobe and own_relgion < 50

(The reason I am making Wizzrobes recruit by religion is that the AI doesn't understand the whole fort mechanic that they originally had).

Welcome to the wonderful and well designed hard coded disorganized some things faction specific some things culture specific engine that is Medieval 2. There are so many boneheaded choices made with how this engine is structured that it makes my head spin sometimes.

I'll probably adopt this method when I get around to working on the Wizzrobes more. Not sure why I didn't think to use priests to convert cities since religion is their whole deal.

I lost the original file, but these are the missing messages that I detected. Just add it to the historic_event.txt

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    {GAMESTART_TWILI_TITLE} The Forces of Twilight
{GAMESTART_TWILI_BODY}Master, I bow to thee and your power. You have come in command of our people and now it is time to bring forth our might. Before such acts can come to be though, it would be in your best interests to listen to what the Twili have to say.
In the distant past our great ancestors, the Interlopers, were tossed into the Mirror of Twilight by the tyrannical Hylians as a means to rid of their influence. Fortune would have it that the Mirror lead them here, where we have long rebuilt our empire. Hyrule is a land of bountiless resources for our people, but it is quite an alien world now that we have dwelled in the dim light for so long. Our people must tread carefully and minimize exposure to the Hyrulean sun, lest we be bested by the natives of Hyrule. We will not be welcomed by any, and nor should we. Hyrule was to be ours, and it will be ours once again. Regardless, if you can take advantage of the stupidity of some races that dwell in Hyrule you may make powerful allies and willing slaves to our will. Don't be afraid to conquer through trickery rather thAn force, for the Hylians will show no mercy even if we go about our task with great honor.
We have been fortunate master, fortunate to have had sanctuary in the Realm of Twilight and our watcher Majora. We cannot dwell here forever though, we must enact justice for our ancestors. Go forth and avenge the Interlopers, master, may his unholiness be with you.
    {GAMESTART_FAIRY_TITLE} The Fairies of Tarm
{GAMESTART_FAIRY_BODY} welcome you dear and Great one, for the secrets of Tarm are now at your disposal and its essence has seen fit to let you lead the Fairies. It would be foolish to ignore the will of Tarm though, so pay heed lest you become trapped and siphoned into the ruins forever.
It is said that Tarm fell from the sky before known time, and us with it. The Essence of Tarm grants us our power, and in turn Tarm has obtained its power through secret forces in the world. There are many though who are unknowlingly corrupting the land and thus these sources, and it must be dealt with should we wish to retain our powers and long life. The ambitious people of Labrynna to the south are spreading quickly, and with their so called magic they are destroying the natural earth to fuel their mysterious powers. It is either us or them, and to be truthful the prospect of losing my powers to grant their weapons function does not appease me in the least. Remove this threat so that the Essence may continue to absorb the life of the world and grant us our abilities. Beware too the young races of the west, in due time they will spread to this land and threaten the Essence.
The time has come Great one. I have full faith that you will assure the land stand untouched and the Essence of Tarm will continue to gain power from the earth. May the Essence watch over your endeavor Great one.
{GAMESTART_SHEIKAH_BODY}Tidings fellow Sheikah. Our empire has come to power, and your skill is needed to help lead our people and guide the hand of Hyrule. Knowledge is power, so heed it well before you begin the task set before you.
The Sheikah have remained bound to shadows since the dawn of time. We've guided the people of Hyrule, prevented wars, and assured the will of the Goddesses is spread by means that most would consider unethical and immoral. That is the price of being their humble servants though... one must not fear to get blood on their hands to assure order and law. As such you must be prepared to fight if the Sheikah are revealed at large. The people of Hyrule are becoming very difficult to manage from the shadows, and preventing wars may not be possible in the future. As such do not fear to change your policy of prevention to that of supporting. Should an empire seek to unravel the Sheikah then seek out another to war upon it. We have many manipulators within Hyrule and with such passionate hatred building between the races it will be quite easy to start wars between them to keep us in the shadows.
In the end Hyrule must prevail. The Triforce must be kept locked away from mortals, and the will of the Goddesses must be kept strong. Go forth fellow Sheikah, and may the Goddesses light your way through the shadows that you must pass.

It would seem that for untold years we have been trapped in an unending civil war with ourselves, unaware of the insanity we were cursed to relive forever. It is only by chance that you and several others were granted the knowledge of our curse, and as such managed to break us of our bonds and gain us a chance to reclaim Hyrule. Many consider us long dead, and once the land is made aware of our return there will no doubt be hostilities. The Golden Goddesses are worshipped by many in Hyrule, and being targets of their punishment does not do much to validate our standing in these lands. Should you wish, we can finally turn our faith to Majora, whom no doubt will grant us reward for our service to his will. You may also wish to make amends with the Goddesses and earn our forgiveness in their eyes. Either way, our people will strive to whatever end will wash away the blood in our past.

As such we Wizzrobe have devised a test for the Hylians... manifest a false Goddess and have her offer them a place of power. Those faithful to the Goddesses will be spared. Those that take the offer, well we will leave that a surprise for you to enjoy. In the meantime we suggest you keep a low profile, establish a church outside a Hylian city, and wait for the converts to flock to your cause.

I think maybe these special faction (wizzrobes, sheikahs, stalfos, ikana, etc) needs to act different if it is played by player and if it is played by AI.

Thanks a lot, that did the trick. If you had the other missing texts, it would be a tremendous help as well.

I'll probably adopt this method when I get around to working on the Wizzrobes more. Not sure why I didn't think to use priests to convert cities since religion is their whole deal.
If I finish what I'm doing with them and it all works fine, I can share what I have if you like.

I´m almost sure none were left. I read every for every "event historic ..." and "historic_event" in the campaign_script.txt; and then compared each one with the original historic_event.txt.string.bin [with its format] just after I errased and reinstalled the mod to be sure it was the original.

The list: [NOTICE: I made it for myself, I used "ya" for found; "faltó" is missing; "encontrado" is found, "no encontrado" is not found; "no se usa" = it is not used].

I couldn´t find these three messages: "Hero_Akazoo", "Hero_Onox" and "Hero_Stallord". These are commented in campaign_scritpt.txt, so better not change it. I really don´t want to admit any mistake if I have made one, because of the time I put in it to make sure the game would not crash because of this file.

EDIT: when I wrote found ("encontrado"), I mean that I found the message in the original historic_event.txt.string.bin that were missing in historic_event.txt file. I wrote "ya" to say that the requested message is already found in both files (so they have not problem).
