    Default Unit Size Question

Good day! Quick question.. are the unit sizes suppose to be 20-40 men per unit? I just installed the mod today and was a little thrown off by the minute sizes. Had been recently playing RS2 where you typically have 100-150 men per unit, which created some very interesting battles. I checked out the preferences but did not find anything relating to unit size. Quick response would be appreciated !

I think you have the sizes set to Medium; check the Options menu in-game from the Main Menu. 40 men/unit is the Base/Medium size for most Infantry units, with 25 being the Cavalry size; on Large, most Infantry are ~80, and Cavalry are 50; on Huge, I *think* most infantry are 160 (Pikes are 240), and Cavalry are 100. I usually use Large. Do note that this won't affect saved games - you have to start a new game to get the changed sizes.
I beat back their first attack with ease. Properly employed, E's can be very deadly, deadlier even than P's and Z's, though they're not as lethal as Paula Abdul or Right Said Fred.

Thanks for the quick response! I did as you indicated, however, I could not find the option to change unit size in-game. The only "options" I have in options is video/audio/camera/somethingelse, but no gameplay option. I also attempted to start a single-player campaign to see if I could change it there, but to no avail. I'm stumped !

you change the settings in the "advanced options" menu, then you start a new game.

For some stupid reason, the unit size setting is hidden in the "video options" menu.

If your computer can handle it, select "huge" unit size.

Ah, higher unit size. Those beautiful corpse piles that it creates make me so happy.

Thanks for the help, gents! Huge armies are the way to go. Although I'll have to fiddle around with the battle UI.. I like having my fast-forward option when routing. Hell of a game.. I've started about 7 different campaigns since 1400, so much information to delve into!

Oh yeah. You shouldn;t have any trouble with the UI. The little fast forward arrow should be right there by default. It's the one that goes "1.0-2.0-6.o"

I think I saw somewhere that it is recommended to play on large, not huge. Huge seems like it is teetering on overkill, to me. Not to mention the space constraints of some of the towns/cities. I think I read somewhere else that, for Romans, unit sizes would have historically been in the 120 unit range. The only problem is large gives you 80-82 infantry per unit and huge gives you 160+ per unit. Either way it always feels off by 40 units, give or take.

It's probably best to play with what makes it the most enjoyable for you.

Huge unit sizes also tends to depopulate AI cities.

Large is pretty good. Phalanxes are much weaker with 60 men than with 120.

... Phalanxes are only really satisfying when you can make huge blocks of 242 men, IMO. Which is also closest to their historical unit size.

But armies of 242 men per unit can really mess up your computer speed. I'd recommend 120 for those who have medium to low computers.
