Default Yronwood; seat of House Yronwood High Lords of the Boneway.

Standing on a Western promontory 200 feet above the Boneway Pass, Yronwood is a powerful and ancient citadel. The two paths leading up to the castle are steep, winding and exposed to arrow fire for their entire lengths. When visitors emerge at the top they are blocked by the outer walls which command access onto the promontory itself. Visitors from the North will enter via the Iron Gate, whereas visitors from the South enter via the Sand Gate.

Once inside visitors will find themselves inside an enormous bailey, one of the largest in the Seven Kingdoms, that is formed from almost the entirety of the plateau. However, guests (and potential attackers) are hemmed in by the two outer walls to North and South, the Inner wall to the East and the face of the mountain to the West. The mountain face is pitted with man-made caves and catacombs where the Yronwoods store much of their food, as wells as inter their dead in burial caves. Some of the poorer residents of the Castleton (unique in all Westeros in that it is entirely contained inside the bailey) make their homes in these caves. Collectively they are known as The Masons Furrows. The Furrows also serve as a useful bastion from which archers can shoot at attackers or small bodies of men can conduct hit-and-run attacks on assaulting armies. Rumour has it there is also a passage to the floor of the pass.

The Castleton is found inside the outer walls and is a prosperous town of decent size, the largest within the Boneway. It is a centre of trade between Dorne and the rest of the other Kingdoms. Members of House Yronwood can often be found walking its paved streets and entering its elegant stone buildings. The smallfolk who dwell here have been loyal to House Yronwood since time long past. After passing through the Castleton a visitor will come to the enormous inner walls which, standing 50 feet high, look like part of the mountain themselves. The only way through these walls is to pass through The Royal Gate.

Once inside the castle of House Yronwood sits hard against the edge of the plateau. Its three towers standing stark against the high desert sky. The Main Keep is where the Lord Yronwood has his Great Hall as well as his Small Hall, for receiving his vassals and visitors of his acquaintance the Formal Solar is also to be found here. It is also where the main kitchens, the dungeons, the septry and most of the servants chambers are to be found. The smaller New Keep is where chambers are kept for visiting dignitaries and vassals. This keep also houses the barracks and armoury.

Finally the three towers are the Bone Tower, where House Yronwood has their personal chambers. This is the smallest of the three towers and sits at the Easternmost edge of the castle, looking out directly over the Boneway. The second tower is the Maester's Tower where, not only does the Maester to House Yronwood reside, but visitors of high honour and prestige are often given chambers here. Over the years several Kings and Princes have made their residence here. The Maester's Tower sits at the Southern side of the castle and looks out over the sand strewn pass into Dorne proper. The final tower, and tallest of the three is the Warden's Tower. This is where Lord Yronwood himself has his personal chambers, as well as his personal solar. This tower face North, towards the Stormlands and on the top is a beacon that is always ready to be lit warning all of Dorne should an enemy host enter the Boneway. All three of these towers can be entered on the ground floor but are also connected to the top floor of the Main Keep by bridges and are connected to each other by thin walkways know as the Cobwebs that stand a further hundred feet in the air.

    Motto and history

House Yronwood of Yronwood is the most powerful house in Dorne after the Martells. The Yronwoods were important kings in Dorne before the arrival of the Rhoynar; the head of the house continues to hold the title "The Bloodroyal". They fought the Martells during Nymeria's War and since then the two houses have been rivals for the control of Dorne. This has recently cooled with the marriage of Dafyd Yronwood to Lucia Martell.

    House Yronwood
Lord Ythan Yronwood. Age: 13. Lord of Yronwood, Warden of the Stone Way, The Bloodroyal, High Lord of the Boneway.
Oldest child of Lord Trebor Yronwood and Lady Desmera he is a slightly arrogant child who has only recently succeeded his father. Currently under the guidance of his mother, to whom he is close he faces a daunting task in becoming the most powerful Lord in Dorne at such a young age.

Lady Desmera Yronwood nee Jordayne. Age 39.
Widow of Lord Trebor Yronwood, who recently died in a hunting accident, and mother to Lord Ythan; a boy of twelve. Lady Desmera is also sister to Lady Jordayne. A graceful lady, she is striking rather than truly beautiful but with a presence to her, she is no stranger to hunting having a particular affinity for the bow. Highly intelligent, she is the real ruler of Yronwood even though her son now carries Lord Trebor's title. Possessed of a fierce temper, yet calculating when she must be, there are rumours surrounding the parentage of her younger son, Anders.

Lord Dafyd Martell-Yronwood. Age: 43. Prince-Consort of Dorne. Older brother to Lord Trebor, who recently passed. He stood to inherit Yronwood but was removed from the inheritance after his father, Lord Cletus, choose to marry him to the heir to Sunspear in an effort to stem discord between Yronwood and Sunspear in the aftermath of the civil war. Dafyd was required to renounce his claim...and his first wife, an Uller of Hellholt had recently died. Dafyd was required to leave his son by her, Yros. Dafyd married into Martell and has fathered six children on Princess Lucia. A good commander of men, and a fair knight, he is dignified and solid, though their is a tinge of sadness to him. In council he is measured and always considers carefully before he speaks. An honourable man and one respected throughout Dorne.

    Ser Yros Yronwood. Age: 25.

A comely young man with a hot temper, Ser Yros is the oldest son of Lord Dafyd and cousin to Lord Ythan. A seducer of great renown he was banished from Sunspear after alienating many Lords of the Court by sleeping with their wives. However, many believe this was because Princess Lucia deemed him to be too much of a threat to the true heirs to Dorne and could not risk alienating the Yronwoods by killing him. His beautiful features conceal a dark, ambitious soul that feels three times abandoned, firstly by his father, then by his Princess and finally by his family where he holds no true position at Court. Rumours persist that he and his Aunt are on more than friendly terms.

Most powerful of Yronwood's vassals; the Manwoody's are nearly as old a bloodline as their liege lords. House Manwoody commands a lot of men. Their stronghold at Kingsgrave is high up in the Red Mountains, and has seen many an army dash themselves to pieces against it.

Lord Dagos Manwoody. Age: 51. "The Laughing Skull." Lord of Kingsgrave. A seemingly-jovial man who is ruthlessly ambitious. He and his late-liege were not on the best of terms at Lord Trebor's death. Not afraid to spill blood in pursuit of his desires. There are monstrous rumours about what takes place at Kingsgrave under his rule.

A fierce young knight reknown for his prowess with the sword, and his masterful horsemanship; Vickon Wyl only recently was raised to the Lordship of his house. Hot-tempered but with an easy charm and grace he makes a fine friend but an implacable enemy. HIs nickname comes from both his combat style and the way his cavalry forces conducted themselves in the war.

Not to be confused with the Vale House of the same name, House Hunter is very newly raised, as opposed to the Lords of Longbow Hall. Tracing their founding to a valued adviser to the late Lord Cletus Yronwood, they are poor but fecund. Their arms are a wooden stick, brown, on a green and red chequey.

Lord Quellon Hunter. Age: 60. "The Old Vulture."
Founder of House Hunter, and a knight of some fame in his youth he served Lord Cletus firstly as a hedge knight and then, after he lost his leg saving Yronwood's life as an adviser. Since gaining his Lordship he has carefully married his children off to other vassals to Yronwood and built alliances in order to secure his family's future.

Lady Desmera Yronwood stood in her good-mother's chambers and watched as the old lady dissolved into tears. Her son, Desmera's husband, was dead the news arrived just this morning. 'Pathetic.' Desmera thought with a sneer. 'He was a fool and not worth the water you waste on him.' She reached out a hand to console the old woman, she must appear to be a good daughter after all, and she needed to stay on the old lady's good side. Gysella Yronwood was her only real competition when it came to ruling her deceased husband's huge fiefdom. It wouldn't do to alienate her before Desmera could secure her own alliances.

"Don't cry so mother. He wouldn't have wanted it." She said soothingly. 'He wouldn't have noticed even if he were alive.' She thought. Her marriage to Trebor Yronwood had not been a happy one and, on more than one occasion she had sought out other men for her sport. The truth was, Desmera was glad he was gone, leaving her son Ythan his seat and his wife in control.
"Well of course he wouldn't have wanted it you fool!" Shrieked the old woman, tears still streaming down her face. "Who does want tears? Just get out and let me grieve." And she fell into heavy, racking sobs. 'So much for staying on her good side.' Desmera thought with a mental sigh. 'I shall need to move quickly. And carefully.'
"As you will mother." She said, putting on her best tone of hurt pride. "I shall see to the children, and I had best send a raven to Sunspear. Dafyd needs to know."

With that, Desmera left the old woman to her sobs and went about her business. Free at last.

Approaching from the south, a retinue flying the Rhoynish sun of Martell approaches the seat of House Yronwood.

The Sand Gate stands open as the royal party approach; the banner of Martell flying from the Maester's Tower. A small party rode out of the gate and down the winding road. Lady Desmera and her son, the new Lord Yronwood at the head of the party. Ythan was attended closely by his sworn shield, Ser Harmen Wyl, and behind them rode The Blackhammer. It was as the royal party drew closer that Ser Edgar galloped out to the front, a breach of propriety but then the Blackhammer had never been much for such things.

"My Princess." He said, his deep voice rumbling from somewhere out of the centre of his chest as he gave a mounted bow. "Brother. Welcome home." He said, addressing Lord Dafyd. He leaned in closely, his face grim. "My brother was murdered. I am certain of it." He said with his usual bluff honesty. "And when I discover who it was well..." He patted the head of his great black warhammer almost absentmindedly.

"Dafyd." Lucia states as she sees a single horseman ride past the rest of the Yronwood party. "It seems your brother is quite eager to see us." When he arrives, Lucia smiles and nods. "Ser Edgar." She then rides a bit closer as to whisper, sighing slightly. "If so, then this has become even more of a tragedy for us all. How is the young lord?' Syrio and Illyrio stand watch along with almost all the rest of the Sun Guard.

"Nervous. Trying to hide it behind arrogance." The Blackhammer replied with a twist to his mouth. "He listens to his mother though, and he is doing his best. Though his mother has perhaps a bit too much influence on the boy. He needs to stand his ground with her a bit more."

"He is grieving Edgar, he still has time to grow into the role." Dafyd replied, taken aback by the directness with which his brother had referred to Trebor's murder. He had planned to make discreet inquiries, but had forgotten how direct his brother could be. This was one reason Edgar had never risen to be more than a Captain of Guards, he had no patience for finesse required to work one way into a place of influence. Say one thing about the Blackhammer though, he didn't make such accusations lightly, if he thought Trebor was murdered then he had good reason to. "A few years under his mother's tutelage will do him good."

"Aye. Desmera's a sharp one alright. Mayhaps too sharp, she might not be so willing to let the boy take his place when the time comes. Besides Yros..." He stopped mid sentence as he realised who he was talking to.

Lucia nods, agreeing with her husband. "He'll grow into being a fine Lord of the Boneway, Ser Edgar. His mother and his father's court will mold him into such, and when the time comes, I'm sure she'll step aside to then serve as a loyal councilor of her son." "I hope." Lucia thinks while sighing. "I shall let you two catch up, I wil lgo greet Lady Yronwood and the young lord." she motions for Syrio, Illyrio, and twenty of her guards to follow her to ride up to the rest of the Yronwood party, leaving the two brothers to catch up and discuss recent events.

Edgar sketches another quick bow from horseback, though Princess Lucia is already on her way to greet Desmera.
"It may be that I am overly cautious, and I might be wrong about Desmera but we both know that Hunter and Manwoody will eat the boy for breakfast if they think him weak. And Wyl has been champing at the bit for an excused to raid Dondarrion lands after last Winter, he won't be as truculent as Manwoody or as cunning as Hunter but he is young, and a fair knight already. He could easily gain sway over a young mind eager for a hero to follow."
Dafyd smiles a little at that. "Fortunate then he has his Uncle Blackhammer to look out for him."
Edgar smiled a little himself at that. "Aye, I have a reputation as a fighter I'll not deny it. But I've not got the dash and vigour that Wyl has. That's the kind of knight young boys dream of being. But I stand by what I said he needs to show a little mettle. Otherwise when Manwoody gets here..." Edgar gave a grimace, leaving the though unsaid.
"He hasn't arrived yet?" Dafyd asked, surprise colouring his voice.
"Of course not. You know him and Trebor never did did get along. Not that I could blame Trebor for that; Dagos Manwoody is an evil bastard alright. He hides it behind that smile but there have been too many rumours for it not to be true. He said that he had urgent matters to attend to but he would be here for the funeral. One last insult to Trebor before he is buried."
Dafyd could not disagree. The Lord of Kingsgrave was a most troublesome man, but he had other thoughts closer to the surface of his mind right now. "Edgar, about Yros..."
"Aye...well..." The two brothers fell to talking in earnest.

    *****

"My Princess, I bid you welcome to Yronwood." The Lady Desmera said, as she got down from her horse and performed a perfect curtsey before mounting again. Her dark hair falling over to one side of her neck in doing so. "I trust the Blackhammer did not bore you overmuch with talk of murder and treason?" She asked with mild amusement in her voice.

Lucia slightly bows from horseback. "Thank you, my lady. I have heard it before. When my father passed on, some of the court expected an assassin when in truth it was a illness. It may just be grief clouding his judgement. It is a tragic incident nonetheless."

Desmera nodded, sadness on her features. It was a most believable look. "That it is. And I think it is as you say, Edgar is a good man and he loved his brother well. I for one hope there was no foul play, else there will be nothing to come between the Blackhammer and his vengeance. The stories of his fury are most accurate I can assure you. Trebor says..." a slight pause. "Said that he once saw Edgar fight his way through six men in a tavern to get to one who had insulted him. Dorne does not need his recklessness at this moment I should think."

Lucia nods, appearing ambivalent about the discussion while showing some sadness befitting the situation. "Of course not, foul play generally leads to even more suffering in the pursuit for justice, and then vengeance. As for the Blackhammer, there are also stories of his integrity and honesty in serving his brother for many years." "Of course, recklessness isn't ideal but sometimes it does serve as a excellent tool for intimidation if the stories are true." Lucia chimes to herself mentally before turning to Ythan. "Hello, Lord Yronwood. You've grown since I last saw you." she smiles at the young lord, deciding not to mention anything to do with his father.

Ythan Yronwood was at that awkward age. Too big to be considered a child, yet not quite grown into the body of a man he was all awkward, long limbs. "He...hello My Princess." A sharp frown from Desmira. Ythan's ears began to redden. "I mean...My Princess, be welcome to Yronwood. My hearth and hall are yours." He said in a grave voice only slightly ruined by breaking toward the end of the greeting. Ser Harmen Wyl stifled a grin behind a gauntleted hand.

The Princess's smile turns in a mischievous smirk, the young lord reminding her a bit of how her brother was at his age, and how she would tease him out of boredom. "Thank you, my lord Yronwood." Lucia bows to the young lord, but her eyes never stop staring at the Yronwood party, and noticing Wyl's stifled grin slightly widens her smirk for a moment.

"My Lord, perhaps we can make our way inside?" Desmera suggested smoothly.
"As you will mother." Ythan gave the signal and the party began the climb back up to the plateau.
"We have quarters in the Maester's Tower for you and your party, My Princess." Desmera said. "Lord Wyl and Lord Hunter also await you in the keep. Lord Manwoody sends his apologies, he has been detained at Kingsgrave though he assures you he will be here before the funeral."
"Lord Wyl has been showing me how to couch my lance properly!" Ythan said with an air of excitement. "And Lord Hunter has offered to teach me Reason and Rhetoric!"Desmera frowned at the boy and he began to fall silent again, visibly wilting under his mother's disapproval. "Ythan, you aren't to badger those good men so. You have a perfectly good master-of-arms to teach you your weapons and Maester Cedrik is a fine teacher." She turns to the Princess. "Honestly, he'd pester them incessantly if we let him!"

Lucia moves to ride next to Ythan as the party makes their way back up to Yronwood, her guards closely following and the rest of her retinue are given a signal as well to follow. "I see..I am curious to inquire Lord Wyl about any potential raids from the Stormlord Marches, specifically Dondarrion. There seems to have been a lull, but we can't become content thinking they have forgotten their ancient grudges." She then notes the reaction of Lord Yronwood to his mother's disapproval, but then faintly smiles again."While your mother is right in that you have two fine men who can teach you here in Yronwood, and your vassal lords have other matters to do, I don't see any harm in bolstering your education if they are willing to assist in teaching. Of course they shouldn't be your primary teachers, my lord..that is what your maester and master at arms are for."

Ythan smiles a little tremulously, even as Desmera quickly wipe the annoyance off her face. 'They only do it for influence over my son. I am certain Manwoody will have something to offer when he arrives. "Lord Wyl is always talking about Dondarrion, he hates them." Ythan confided to the Princess, unaware of his mother's disapproval. "Lord Hunter says Lord Wyl is blind when it comes to Dondarrion." He laughs a childish thing. "Hunter says Wyl is a fool who will drag us into war." The party came to the Sand Gate, an impressively stout building and emerged into the massive bailey.

"Well, his lands have been raided by them countless times, and he has done the same to theirs. It's a enmity that will likely last until the end of time, just as the Fowlers despise the Carons." Lucia laughs. "Hm...perhaps his rage clouds his judgement, and as for war..the Marcher conflicts have gone on for centuries, even before Dorne was unified. It may start a small conflict, but hopefully it can be prevented from escalating past the cycle of raids it has followed for centuries."

The party rode through the Castleton and toward the Royal Gate, and Desmera stewed and seethed. Her son was Lord Yronwood it was true, but for the Princess to largely ignore her, the regent in all but title was not good for her grip on power. The fact that she talked to Ythan with patience might set a dangerous precedent in the boy's mind. Spurring her horse to the head of the column Desmera tried again.

"My Princess, after the funeral there are several matters which I would like to bring to your attention. I am certain my Lord's bannermen will have issues of their own as well. We hope we can prevail on your judgement in such matters?" She said with a smile.

Lucia looks around, the last time she was here was several years ago. "Just like Sunspear, nothing seems to change." she mentally notes, her trance being broken when Desmera speaks to her. She tilts her head to look at Lady Yronwood with an ambivalent expression. "Very well, I shall listen to these issues and state my opinion on them." "Judgement should be left for Lord Ythan...unless you wish to make him appear weak in the eyes of his vassals?" Lucia thinks, while going back to staring around at Yronwood Castle, nodding slightly in recognition of the few knights and servants that bowed as she passed.

The party finally enters the courtyard and begins to dismount. "My Princess, if you will follow me?" Lady Desmera says, gesturing to the entrance of the Main Keep. "The court eagerly awaits your words." Dafyd dismounts and offers the Princess his arm whilst Lord Ythan and his sworn shield take up there place behind the Princess. Lady Desmera takes her son's arm.
